The Master Beckons to Kailash

Kailash! To paraphrase Star Trek, it is the final frontier, a place where few people have ever gone before. Eight billion people on the planet and yet only a chosen few are privileged to undertake this amazing pilgrimage. And this privilege comes only through grace – the grace of one’s ancestors, the grace of one’s Master, the grace of Lord Shiva, and the grace of the Guru Mandala (the Masters of the Tradition). Nothing but grace gets one an invite from Lord Shiva.

It is this grace that opens the doors to various experiences on the pilgrimage. It is this grace that keeps one alive in the harshest of environments on this pilgrimage. It is this grace that allows one to successfully complete the pilgrimage. I have seen some pilgrims who feel that they were entitled to receive this grace – wishful thinking that they are special in some way to deserve it. To mistake grace with entitlement can only be termed as sheer ignorance and, without a shadow of doubt, ego and ingratitude of the highest order.

According to Mohanji, a pilgirimage to Kailash is complete when one takes a dip in the holy Manasarovar lake and has a darshan (holy sight) of holy Mount Kailash. Optionally, one can perform a circumambulation around holy Mount Kailash – either via the Outer Kora (circumbulation) route or the Inner Kora route. By the grace of Mohanji, I have been very fortunate to be on the Kailash pilgrimage twice – once in 2014 on the Outer Kora route and once in 2016 on the Inner Kora route.

Like most Hindus, I had heard of the holy pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. Thanks to an amazing mythology attached to it wherein Lord Shiva stays atop this beautiful white snowy mountain in the middle of nowhere with His family and His army. It could as well be a fairy tale because not many even dream to undertake this pilgrimage unlike the Char Dham (“four abodes”) pilgrimage – a pilgrimage to the four holy sites in India widely revered by Hindus and considered highly sacred to visit at least once in one’s lifetime.

The Kailash pilgrimage is not even visible on anyone’s radar, much less doing it. Even those that wistfully think about doing it feel that it is a pipe dream. And yet here I ended up doing a Kailash pilgrimage with a powerful Master a couple of months after vaguely thinking about doing it. If that is not grace, what is?

Listening to the experiences of a (now ex) colleague who had done the Kailash pilgrimage twice with the Chinmaya mission, got me thinking about doing Kailash. I checked with his contact but they said that they did not have any pilgrimage planned in the near future and would get back to me if and when they do. Out of the blue, I received an SMS from the Mumbai Mohanji center that Mohanji would be in town.

And guess the topic at the satsang (divine discourse) when I entered the room – Mohanji had just asked one of the attendees, Dhritiman (aka DB), to talk about his Kailash experience from 2013. At the end, DB mentioned that the pilgrimage would happen in four weeks at the end of that same month (July 2014). Talk about synchronicity! For me, it was like a huge flashing neon sign that I should join the Kailash pilgrimage.

In spite of the last minute runup, the whole registration process was unusually smooth thanks to Sumit from the organizing team and the invisible grace of Mohanji. It was sheer grace that allowed me to participate in the pilgrimage.

Someone canceled at the last minute opening a slot for me to join the group. The Chinese usually required the group permit to be applied a month or two before the pilgrimage (which would have ruled me out). However, that year, the Chinese delayed the group permit application process to just before the start of the pilgrimage.

Finally, my mind started playing games. Do you really want to go to a pilgrimage where you don’t know anyone? Wouldn’t it be better to use the two weeks to finally do the much-awaited motorcycle trip to Leh and Ladakh (a holy grail for bikers to ride on the highest motorable road in the world)? Finally, better sense prevailed and I decided against the motorcycle trip to join the Kailash pilgrimage.

2014 was a special year for the Kailash pilgrimage– the year of Dev Kumbh which comes once every 12 years. Dev Kumbh is special in that each Kora counts as twelve. Each Outer Kora (a 56km circumambulation around Mount Kailash) done that year got one the benefit of doing twelve Outer Koras and equivalently the twelve whammy of transformation.

This enabled me to qualify for the Inner Kora. So, I “accidentally” ended up doing the Kailash pilgrimage during the best possible year. Amazing “accident” or infinite blessing? You decide.

On the flight to Kathmandu, I bumped into a girl from the Mumbai meditation group who was also doing the pilgrimage. She mentioned that there were around 85 people from around 20 different countries. I balked at the size and diversity of the group. I was expecting the group to be small – around 20-30 people. A vague thought surfaced to hijack the plane, turn the flight back and head back home.

When I reached the hotel, I saw a multitude of people outside the hotel enjoying the traditional Nepalese welcome. Most of them apparently knew each other. Hugs and greetings were being liberally exchanged. The one person I knew in this huge group had disappeared into this overfriendly sea of humanity. I tried my best to dematerialize myself.

I usually feel very conscious in a group setting. Breaking the ice is an ordeal for me because I am not sure what to say. The awkward pauses after the initial greeting are the stuff nightmares are made of. Once I get to know people, I am the loudest one in the room. When people who know me meet people who don’t know me, they get surprised because either group can’t seem to correlate my quiet self and my loud self.

Since there was not much I could do now, I decided to go with the flow. Since I lacked the spiritual abilities to disappear at will or the Harry Potter invisibility cloak, I did the next best thing. I moved over to where the bags were being offloaded and started helping there. Interestingly, this happened to be one of my fun tasks throughout the pilgrimage.

I had volunteered to help out with the pilgrimage and was assigned to daily task of getting the bags ready for loading each morning and unloading and distributing the bags in the evening. Interestingly, this pilgrimage is all about releasing baggage. Much like life, people would initially let go of their baggage, feel empty without it and take it back very soon.

It turned out to be a richly diverse group with all the obvious differences of color, race, religion, culture, nationalities, etc. Yet, it was an amazing group and, by the end of pilgrimage, they all seemed like family.

The pilgrimage felt like a special homecoming where long lost loved ones met after a long hiatus. Subsequently, I have come to expect this at most retreats with Mohanji. Our wider spiritual family reuniting with us and getting every closer, re-igniting the flame formed from the sparks of numerous past life interactions.

Back then in 2014, I smoked heavily. The first thing I did was to find the kindred company of fellow smokers in our pilgrimage group. And I found two active (a Romanian and a UAE born Indian) and two passive German smokers who were only there for the company. We whiled the night away discussing spiritual conspiracy theories over coffee and cigarettes. One of the Germans (henceforth referred to as Z-man) was very interesting.

Z-man could tap in and figure out the past life connections of any two people. He was also sensitive to energies; and had an “eye” that could see and “ears” that could hear. There was a Serbian doctor in our group who, for some reason, I kept referring to as Boris (wasn’t his name). I would apologize and the kind doctor finally told me, “Never mind. You can call me Boris since you like that name better.”

I told Z-man about this Boris episode. He went quiet, closed his eyes and on opening them said, “Russian war. 1800s. You were soldiers. You were younger. He was older. He died before you. His name in that life was Boris.” Such interesting “factoids” would be served at a moment’s notice by the Z-man!

Back then, I was a spiritual greenhorn with energies, visions and such amazing happenings in the parallel spiritual reality. Still am! The Z-man was my guide helping my “blind” self understand the import and magnitude of the spiritual occurrences that were unfolding during the pilgrimage.

He was instrumental in unravelling, to me, the significance of the pilgrimage. Post Kailash, he also helped me decipher some of my spiritual experiences. As you can see, the Divine always provides for the spiritually disabled. My sincere and heartfelt love and gratitude to the Z-man.

The day before we were scheduled to leave Kathmandu, my fellow smokers decided to go cold turkey. Inspired by them, I made one feeble attempt to quit smoking the following afternoon during our visit to the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu. I left my packet of Indian cigarettes and the lighter on the wall near the temple and threw a conciliatory hopeful prayer in the direction of the Lord Pashupatinath (Lord Shiva) to take care of the addiction.

My resolve was steadily weakened and eventually undone by the evening as I headed out to the bar in search of cigarettes. Thus, began my parallel experimental odyssey into the murky world of Nepali and Chinese cigarettes through the pilgrimage. The ones where the brands are recognized by color and the potency by how the smoke burns on the way in.

A landslide happened in the countryside the day we were supposed to leave Kathmandu. This took place exactly between Kathmandu and the Chinese border. The landslide broke a dam and almost 500 people died that night. The tour operators informed all Kailash groups that roads leading to the Friendship bridge had been devastated effectively cancelling the pilgrimage.

No pilgrimage and the money paid would be forfeited since it was caused by “acts of God” circumstances. Mohanji told Sumit that cancelling the trip was not a solution in his Tradition and tasked him to find alternatives. Sumit acted quickly and took a decision, which was backed by Mohanji, to engage helicopters at an extra cost to pilgrims and fly over the impacted area to get to the other side.

It took a whole day of back-to-back sorties to get the entire group safely to the other side. After our last sortie, these helicopters were recalled back to assist with the emergency and were not available for general purpose usage. We literally made it through the skin of our teeth. Remember, almost all pilgrims from other groups were still stranded in Kathmandu. Isn’t this a sheer miracle?

In spite of smoking heavily all the way through the pilgrimage in high altitude environments, I hardly faced any breathlessness save some teething acclimatization issues on the first day at Nyalam. I breezed through the first day of the circumambulation of Mount Kailash and blazed all the way up to Dolmala pass on the second day. Dolmala pass was the highest point of our pilgrimage and the trek up to the pass was supposedly the hardest part of the pilgrimage.

I was so proud that I had reached Dolmala pass comfortably despite my smoking habit. I decided to celebrate with a cup of noodle soup and entered one of the tented restaurants. I noticed Mohanji and some of the group were already sitting there and joined them. After a while, they left and I proceeded to enjoy my noodle soup.

As the noodle soup spread it’s warmth through my body, I decided to spend some more time resting. Time went by and I realized that I was just sitting there. I was glued to the wooden bench. I had no interest to get up and proceed with the trek ahead. I just sat there watching everything around me. It felt like eternity. I struggled to do something but I was paralyzed.

Suddenly, I heard a voice from within saying, “Run!” Here, I couldn’t even get up and something within was asking me to run. I shook my head. And then, the voice pronounced even more powerfully, “Run! Run! Run! Just run” Something took hold of me and, as if pushed out, I jolted off the bench and started running out of the tent and across the trails leading downhill from Dolmala pass.

In those high altitudes, people walk slower to conserve energy and here I was running through the trails in heavy army boots like a crazed mad man. Must have been quite a sight! I kept running for a very long time until I was sure that the inertia and lethargy had left me. I stopped running and continued to walk the trails to Diraphuk, our camp for the night.

That’s when the ordeal started. One turn around the mountain led to another; and then another; and then a new mountain would appear; and the scene would repeat all over again with no end in sight. I was stuck in an infinite loop like in the movie Groundhog Day. To add to my woes, I met the girl from the Mumbai meditation group who was in a terrible shape and was sitting by herself on the side of the trails.

She had all but given up and was preparing herself to get petrified into the surrounding barren mountain landscape. Here, I was struggling to finish the day’s trek and God sends me another struggler for company. And a “tortoise” at that. Reminded me of the Marathi idiom, “Dushkalat terava mahina” (the thirteenth month in the year of famine). Abandoning her was tempting but not an option.

Given that she was doing worse than me, I had to focus on her and how to get her to complete the day’s trek. I prepared for the worst. I had figured that it may be past sunset and possibly way into the night before we get to the camp at Diraphuk. A fuller moon in the sky would ensure that we had enough light along the way.

I buckled in a bit tighter to be ready for the long haul and do whatever it takes to get both of us there. I had to employ every tool in the book to encourage her to take a few steps every now and then. And the elements played their part by peeing on our efforts by raining at frequent intervals and making things just a little bit harder.

In hindsight, her entry turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me. From the top of Dolmala pass, I had zombie walked the whole way till I met her. Because of her, I forgot all my troubles and was provided a strong intent to complete the day’s trek. As we got closer to the camp, she regained her mojo and we walked into the camp by twilight.

And, the same zombie walk was repeated for most of the last day (day 3) of the Outer Kora as well. Mohanji once remarked to me, “You only think you walked Kailash. You were unconscious. Someone carried you.” I have no choice but to grudgingly agree. I know that if it had been left to me, I would never have completed the trek by myself.

All through the Kailash pilgrimage, I felt a deep anguish of being separated from the Divine. It kept expressing itself very strongly several times at periodic intervals throughout the pilgrimage. Like there is an awesome party happening in the neighborhood. You can hear the sounds and see the lights. And you want so badly to be there. But no one invited you and you don’t know where it is happening so you can’t gatecrash it.

And you feel that they don’t want you there. I felt a deep agony for the fall from grace that required me to be born on earth. When alone, I would sing devotional songs, be deeply moved to tears and call out to be taken back from whence I came though I had no clue where that was.

After the first day’s trek, we reached Diraphuk which is the closest one gets to Mount Kailash on the Outer Kora. Mohanji wanted the priest to do a puja at Charan Sparsh (literally “touch the feet”) – considered the feet of Mount Kailash located a 3-4 hour trek from Diraphuk. That year, the Chinese army were denying access to Charan Sparsh.

A few members of our group went to request for permission. I didn’t know it was Charan Sparsh and erroneously thought that we were going to the base of Mount Kailash. I stood alone in front of Mount Kailash and strongly implored that I wanted to be let through to come closer (more like I deserved to).

For some strange reason, I felt I was entitled to go there and touch Mount Kailash. I cried with a deep anguish both within and without. However, we were denied access. So, we had to abandon the prospect of going there. It was not to be. I had deep feelings of betrayal and abandonment at that time.

Like the Godfather “Fredo, you broke my heart” kind of let down. I still can’t explain why I felt that way on that day. But the Master listens to all true cries of love and showers His grace to grant those wishes. This wish found fruition in my Kailash pilgrimage part deux in 2016. I remember the night vigils when we were staying on the shores of Lake Manasarovar. We were told that divine beings come to take dips in Lake Manasarovar and appear to us as beautiful lights. Mohanji had warned us to watch and pray to them from a distance. He specifically asked us not to interact with them since their high energies could fry our nerves leaving us dead or worse in a vegetative state.

Late in the night and in the wee hours of the morning, we would sit in groups just outside the gates of the compound and patiently wait for them to show up. And show up they did! Bright lights in multi-colored hues. They would radiate a bright luminous glow, increase or decrease in size, change colors, move in all directions – come closer or go farther, go up and down, left and right – flash on and off, come close to the surface and disappear for a while (presumably taking dips in the lake).

You couldn’t mistake them for anything else. In particular, I distinctly remember this group of three with one shining brighter than the rest. They kept flashing in sequence and moving around as if dancing to unheard celestial music playing in the background. A truly blissful experience.

I did have a “surreal” out-of-the-ordinary experience. On one of the vigils, I ended up staying out longer than the rest of the group. The place was so serene that it felt just good to spend some more time out there all alone. Suddenly, I noticed light shining from my right. The place gets hazy and misty in the night and hence the light was diffuse which made the scene all the more surreal.

Imagine my surprise, when I saw a few hazy white beings of light walking around a couple of hundred meters in front of me. They were slightly tall and were walking in a straight line. It looked like a scene from the movie, The Village, when the beings visit the village. I watched them with baited breath unsure whether to stay put or quietly head back.

They were too close and I was already in their presence so I decided to stay put while praying to Mohanji and the Masters to protect me. They walked quietly past me towards the end of the road. Suddenly, there was a commotion as I heard them talking to each other followed by the sound of vehicles revving up to life. They started their vehicles parked in the distance, got into them and left.

My “divine beings of light” turned out to be a group of local villagers. The light was possibly from their headlamps and they were covered from head to toe with blankets (that appeared white in the ambient light) to protect from the biting cold. Stupid people! If only they had parked their vehicles out of sight and hearing,

I would have been convinced of my surreal supernatural experience of bumping into divine beings of light. They ruined my perfect story for future generations on how I was lucky to encounter a group of divine beings and survived to tell the tale.

Throughout the pilgrimage, I got a first glimpse of the Master that was Mohanji. I was in awe of Him and maintained safe distance yet kept meandering close to Him. I was shadowing Him most of the way not really sure what was expected of me or what I expected of Him. I got to observe, first hand, some of the miraculous experiences like His face showing up on Mount Kailash complete with sunglasses and head dress. He told us, “Shiva is teasing me.”

Or when we were massaging his feet on Dolmala Pass, his thighs and calves became as hard as stone and he teasingly enquired if they were like Hanuman’s. In one of the odes to Hanuman, he is referred to as Vajra deha Rudravatar – the avatar (divine incarnation) of Rudra (a form of Lord Shiva) whose body is as hard as the vajra (the thunderbolt weapon of Lord Indra – the king of Gods). Yes, they surely felt like Hanuman’s.

A brief background. Since the start of my spiritual journey, I have felt a deep connection with Mahavatar Babaji and felt his guiding hand. Incidentally, I discovered Mohanji while looking for Mahavatar Babaji spots in Maharashtra to visit during my two week motorcycle trip through Maharashtra in December 2012. I chanced upon Mohanji’s three-part blog post, “Babaji beyond Definitions”. A must read for those who haven’t.

Later, I explored his writings and teachings and also his meditations. I distinctly remember that when I left home for my first meeting with Mohanji, I had the intuition that I would meet my Master. Throughout the satsang, my eyes were glued to his feet. And yet that didn’t feel strange to me either. After the satsang, my mind played its usual tricks and I was not so sure anymore.

After the meeting, I remember telling my friend that Mohanji is good but I don’t think he is my Master. In hindsight, as Morpheus said in the movie, The Matrix, “Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.” I followed his practices quite regularly but never accepted him as my Master. Through the pilgrimage, I was led to consider the possibility that Mohanji could be the One. The question, “Who is my Master – Mahavatar Babaji or Mohanji?” bothered me.

On our return to Kathmandu, I happened to be sitting in front of Mohanji over lunch and, as usual, an informal satsang started as he answered questions asked by the people seated around the table. In response to one of the questions, he answered my unspoken question while looking straight at me. He said, “The Master in front of you is the Master for you.”

“You may want to learn from a ‘higher’ Master but that has no relevance. A student of the first standard may want to learn from a college teacher. But he needs to progress through the intervening standards and reach the collegiate level before the college teacher can teach him anything.”

“A Master can, of course, hand a disciple over to a ‘higher’ Master if he so feels but that is based on his complete understanding of the disciple’s needs. It is not appropriate for a disciple to harbor that expectation since they don’t understand the bigger picture. The Master that is brought to you is your Master.” That put paid to the recurring question in my mind.

Since I was a relative newbie to being around a real Master, I got acquainted for the first time with the different flavors of devotion to the Master. I observed public displays of fawning devotion from many pilgrims and naively took them to be real expressions of love. I felt sad that I lacked the deep devotion within myself compared to what I saw out there. A few months later, most of them disconnected from Mohanji for trifling reasons.

They chose to weigh the words of others over the truth of their own experiences. I now realize that one’s outward expressions are never a reliable measure of the depth of one’s connection. However, some like Sumit who preferred to work silently in the shadows, left a deep impression and inspired me to dig deeper and achieve a greater degree of surrender.

The same goes for experiences shared by people at the end of the pilgrimage. Some pilgrims had amazing visions of Shiva and His family or other deities. Some pilgrims had reached a point of perfect peace, bliss, joy and other good-to-be-in states. Some were experiencing perfect stillness and silence. Some released a lot while others were feeling emptiness. Some had become enlightened (ok. nobody said that but you get the drift). I, for one, felt even more confused than I was before the pilgrimage.

Another pilgrimage experience. The Manasarovar lake was very cold when we entered to take our dips. During my first dip, I found the fellow pilgrim next to me chanting the Lord’s name loudly in a continuous stuttering repetition. His body was also shaking wildly. He was not very responsive and I felt that he was in a very deep trance. Probably in communion with the Lord. I decided to discontinue my dips to watch over him and help him back.

He was in this state for a while as I stood with him and held him steady. After some time, he hinted that he wanted to head back. I held him firmly and guided him back. As we came closer to the shore, he started collecting stones excitedly and also handed me some. I figured that spiritually imbued objects become more apparent in a higher state of consciousness.

Anyways, I helped him back, got him into some warm clothes and headed back to complete my dips. The next day, he sought me out and thanked me for helping him. He said that his body froze in the icy waters and he was unable to move. The chanting and the shaking were his involuntary reactions to the chilling experience. So much for my awe at being fortunate to observe one in an exalted state.

I now realize that experiences are just indicators given to seekers to suggest that they are headed in the right direction. The reason they are given and the manner in which they are given have significance only to the seeker who is experiencing. Hence, it does not make sense to compare our progress based on other people’s experiences. In some cases, the experiences are just elaborate illusions constructed by the mind to entertain itself. One’s transformation is the only true metric of one’s progress.

Life after Kailash was never the same. I attended the Rishikesh retreat with Mohanji later that year in December. Over the months, I had the grace to travel with Mohanji several times. I disappeared from office so regularly that people in my office started joking that I worked between vacations. Slowly but surely the spiral loop of my connection with Mohanji kept getting closer and closer.

Exactly a year after Kailash, I decided to quit work, a day before my birthday, to be with Mohanji for good. I wanted to be free (of the corporate rat race) on my birthday. The interesting part was that it was a very natural process. Not easy but natural. Mohanji suggested that I continue for one more year so I have time to decide before quitting. But I had had enough by then and chose to cut the cord immediately.

The Kailash pilgrimage effected a major transformation in my life and set me firmly on the path. Hence, I have nothing but the highest respect for the Kailash pilgrimage. For me, the choice to do the Kailash pilgrimage is the clarion call that a spiritual seeker answers to indicate to the universe that he is done with playing games and is ready for the highest that evolution has to offer – total and complete liberation.

Miraculous Experiences: Part I with Shiva Kavacham

The unwavering consciousness of a realized Master is the veritable engine that effects the spiritual transformation of the people who come into contact with him thus taking them towards the ultimate goal of liberation. This consciousness – unruffled stillness like still water or perfect mirror – reflects the true nature of the seeker who comes in contact with the Guru. Some are frightened to see their own true form and run away. They are usually blinded by the material world. They are not aware of how bound they are.

Some accept it and decide to walk towards the ultimate goal of personal liberation. The connection of the individual to this consciousness depends on his or her degree of awareness, faith and surrender. Bhaav (devotion or attitude of gratitude with reverence) is the essential ingredient which is a gift of the Master’s grace made eligible through the perseverance and persistence of the individual.

The Master provides several methods that help in deepening the connection – His words (written or spoken), spiritual methods and techniques, energy transfer and, in some cases, spiritual experiences. However, a realized Master’s operating level is not restricted to the physical planes. The work that the Master does in other subtler dimensions is far more transformative and yet not always perceptible and tangible to the individual. It is the pure grace of the Master that flows out of his deep compassion and love to provide and use all available avenues to uplift the individual and move him closer to liberation.

“There are various stages in stillness. Momentary, Partial, Occasional, Induced, Non-induced, Perpetual, Situational so on and so forth to Total or Eternal. Each state has its own level of mastery. Each stage has its value. And the highest is ‘forever still’ where there is no return to non-stillness. Anything else can have a return back possibility. There can be a fallback. This is where you need the presence of an “internally still master”, irrespective of what he is externally. And beware. It is not so easy to handle such a master. He is as powerful as the complete consciousness can be.”

Mohanji’s blogs and books (such as the Power of Purity) are a testament to the power of Truth in the form of the written word. They have attracted spiritual seekers from across the world who have felt the depth and lucidity, that can only come from the Source, delivered in a direct and incisive manner. The words are imbued with His vibrations and hence work in subtle ways to inspire and guide spiritual seekers to seek the highest goal of mankind – liberation – and address their deepest doubts and fears.

Mohanji has also provided several methods and techniques free of charge such as the meditations (Power of Purity, 360°, Blossoms of Love, Bliss of Silence, Freedom meditation), Consciousness Kriya, Conscious Walking, Conscious Dancing, Mai-Tri methodShaktipat, etc. These techniques were received by Him in deep communion in an elevated state of consciousness. Hence, these techniques are divinely empowered to connect deeper with His Consciousness and can be incorporated into one’s spiritual practices to take one further in his or her spiritual goals.

As Mohanji always says, “I always do my job. You do yours”. The Master’s words and techniques are an extension of the same Guru principle. A master delivers only with the purpose of elevating or cleansing the receiver. His intentions are always pure. As Mohanji always says, marry the methods and do not judge or criticise the giver. Everything that is thus delivered has power. The power must be respected.

Too often, people tend to accumulate techniques like they gather material possessions. When the mind refuses to persevere long enough to bear fruit to the use of a technique, the individual either berates the technique or tries to find another that is “more” potent according to his limited mind, ignoring the suggestions of the guru with unlimited mind.

Thus, the individual gets entangled in a mind trap in the search for the “next best” technique or in a lot of cases the “next best” Guru. This can also sometimes lead to perceived superiority of knowing (albeit superficially) a plethora of tools and techniques resulting in mental indigestion and the accompanying malady of knowledge diarrhea – ready to poop undigested knowledge at unsuspecting seekers at the first chance. 🙂

As Paramahansa Yogananda had said so beautifully in one of his Cosmic Chants, “If I find not, I will not blame Thy Sea. I will find fault with my diving”. It also reminds me of a story of the Master, Lahiri Mahasaya, from the Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. One of his disciples tells the Master that he thinks he is ready for the second initiation into Kriya. He requests the Master to consider his request. Lahiri Mahasaya asks the disciple to be seated while he thinks over his request.

Soon another disciple, Brinda the postman, enters into the ashram. Lahiri Mahasaya asks Brinda whether he would like to be initiated into the second level of Kriya. Brinda falls at the Master’s feet and tells him not to burden him any further. The bliss introduced by performing the first level of Kriya had incapacitated him completely to the point where he was incapable of performing his regular duties.

He told the Master that he had come to seek the Guru’s help to be released from his job so he could spend more time doing the Kriya that he had currently received. He couldn’t handle any more initiations. The Master tells the complaining disciple, “See! Brinda swims in the Ocean of Spirit.” The complaining disciple gets shamefaced and accepts the shortcomings and inconsistencies in his practices rather than any fault in the techniques.

As in the Lahiri Mahasaya story, the intent of the article is to showcase the effectiveness and efficacy of every technique or medium provided by the Master through the light of experiences of fellow seekers. My endeavour in this post and the subsequent ones to follow, is to share and present the experiences of individuals from different cultures spread across different geographies to demonstrate universal nature of these experiences without a cultural or geographical bias. These are stories and experiences that have been shared over personal meetings and conversations both in person, over the phone and virtual (Whatsapp, Facebook, etc).

I would like to start the first part of this post with the Shiva Kavacham. Why start this post with the Shiva Kavacham – one may ask? It is not one of the well known techniques like the Power of Purity or 360°. It is a lesser known technique – a new kid on the block. Hence, it is a good first choice since we can bring it to people’s notice. Secondly, it is exclusive and the condition for exclusivity is the fundamental tenet of the Guru principle – Bhaav. Putting both together, there is a certain aspirational quality about exclusivity that makes people strive harder in their spiritual practices. 🙂

A brief overview and background on the Shiva Kavacham. The Shiva Kavacham recited by Mohanji is a very powerful experience to every listener. Mohanji has repeatedly said that there is nothing beyond it. It is for merging with the aspect of Shiva which is formless brightness – the manifested and unmanifested together.

Mohanji had mentioned that maintaining the sanctity of the Shiva Kavacham was of paramount importance. Mohanji insisted that it must be listened with utmost reverence and sacredness and, consciously like meditation, with hundred percent concentration and bhaav. He forbade it to be treated as background music. It was typically played after group meditations as a continuation of gratitude, where all participants maintained silence and deep reverence.

In the past, the person who had received this unique and sacred gift could share it only if the recipient had deep bhaav to Mohanji, Lord Shiva, Lord Dattatreya and his numerous avatars, Hanumanji, Sai Baba, Jesus or any other Master of the Tradition; and was properly informed to treat the gift with respect and reverence

This behooved the recipients to ensure that they used this gift with the sacredness and reverence that it deserved and that they exercised deep discrimination in sharing it with only those people who would value and respect it. Very recently, he relented to make it more accessible to a wider audience so more people could benefit.

Without further ado, we move on to the experiences that people have had with the Shiva Kavacham emphasising the sacredness of the Shiva Kavacham. We hope that people derive the importance of the Shiva Kavacham from these experiences and use it in a proper manner to derive supreme benefit from this sacred gift.

Biba Mohan from Serbia shared this beautiful experience from the UK Retreat in July 2015: “I will never forget the lovely little wooden ‘Gidney hut’ in Gilwell Park near London in which our retreat group recently experienced a true explosion of energy and Grace – Shiva Kavacham after Shaktipat (energy transfer), followed by Sai aarati (ritual worship) while in Mohanji’s expanded presence created the ground for a take off into a most blissful inner state. My body as if turned into a stone statue, mind in perfect stillness, consciousness expanded, as if pulled upward I suddenly got immersed into the purest vibrant Love – no words can describe the magnificence of such a state. For a second, the eyes of Shirdi Baba appeared in my inner vision and then tears, warm tears of eternal gratitude were all that moved over my otherwise frozen body. While the Shirdi aarati was playing, I made a feeble attempt to get back into the body and get up to join Mohanji, but the body would not move, not even one finger. And deep inside I did not want to leave this blissful state, for nothing that one can experience in the physical world can ever come close to it. It was more than an hour or so later that I could slowly come out – strong sensations in the heart chakra (energy center) followed, tears of gratitude that soon turned into loud sobbing (for no reason known to mind), continuous shivers, and waves of great awe and gratitude. Yohan from the UK relates his profound experience of the Shiva Kavacham during the same UK Retreat – “After the Power of Purity meditation in the Gidney Cabin, the Shiva Kavacham was played in Mohanji’s presence. I could see the energy of Shiva flowing through Mohanji but nothing could have prepared me for what followed. My entire physical and energy bodies were filled with pure golden yellow light. I could feel the billions of cells in the body starting to separate and each one being cleansed by this light. Each cell was releasing accumulated “stuff” and memories of pain. I saw many many souls of my ancestral lineage and from previous lives appearing, acknowledging, clearing and healing our previous relationships. Mohanji appeared in his light form (comparable to the old negative film rolls with the outline of his face and hair filled with immense golden light). Pure love enveloped my entire being and I was being bathed in the arms of the Creator – the pure consciousness that sustains entire universes. I wanted to merge and to be in the absolute void of stillness but circumstances and time meant this was not possible yet. My sincere gratitude to Mohanji for creating and holding this space of immense energy and for the cleansing on all levels”.

Swami Mohan Bhaktananda from Durban, South Africa related the following experience with the Shiva Kavacham
“The first time I heard the Shiva Kavacham was at the retreat held in South Africa a few months ago. Mohanji asked us to put the Shiva Kavacham on and asked us to keep our eyes closed and listen to it. I did not expect much more than to enjoy his voice singing, which I love. I closed my eyes and the Shiva Kavacham started. I noticed immediately that my breathing changed. It became deeper and fuller. I started drowning in the energy of the mantras. It not only has the power of Shiva’s protection mantras, but more importantly, it has the amazing energy of Mohanji in it.

My spine began to burn and my body temperature increased. I started to sweat. I felt an intense heat in my tummy area. Although these were happening, it was as if I was just watching it happen to myself. I experienced it but at the same time did not experience it. Slowly the trees and chirping birds disappeared. The walls and glass windows of the room disappeared. The entire room vanished into a blissful void. The other devotees seemed to merge into the void. Even I did not exist and merged into this void.

All that was left was Mohanji. I always have had faith in Mohanji. From the first time I spoke to him, I knew he was Shiva. As he blessed me and as he grew my love, I realised he was Parabrahma. But for the first time, Mohanji blessed me with touching his true nature. It was only a taste. Just a drop of what he is, but enough to change and break concepts I had of him. Words cannot describe what I felt Mohanji to be. Because it was a state of beingness and not a state where logic prevailed. No words have been created to describe what is at the first level past Mohanji’s physical body. I can’t even describe it as bliss or auspicious. Because these too are words that describe a state. Seeing Mohanji during the Shiva Kavacham, showed me (or rather experienced me) that he is beyond states, even beyond the dynamic Prakrithi or the static Purusha states. If I am forced to use words, then he is the ‘causeless cause’. He is the cause of every single thing that happens. The cause of the planets moving, the cause of gravity, the cause of sunshine, the cause of devotion, the cause of energy flow, the case of love, the cause of bhakti, the cause of Gods with form, and He is the cause of the formless everlasting blissfully Parabramha itself. He was here before the formless God was born, because formless is still a form. He is the cause of formlessness.

The physical feeling during this time was just bliss. Tears rolled down my cheeks and again I was just watching this all happen. From my experience the Shiva Kavacham not only brings protection, which is a powerful strong impenetrable ring of fire, but brings peace, stillness and a consciousness beyond the body.”

Jay from Dubai, UAE shared his experience with the Siva Kavacham –
“The most intensive of all was the Shiva Kavacham. This stotram is very, very strong. It has deep meanings. It exemplifies the intriguing and unfathomable sides of Shiva. In fact, it takes us through all the fascinating faces of Shiva. What became more powerful for all of us, even for those who didn’t understand a word, was the way the stotram was recited by Mohanji. The briskness and crispness of the recitation, along with the power of his voice, as well as the stress on each word made it extremely energizing. We were spellbound whenever we heard the stotram. Each time I heard it I could not resist my tears though I wasn’t crying. My hands automatically went to the folding posture and I felt as if I was merging into Shiva. The sense of fearlessness it gave was incomprehensible.”

Palak Mehta from Pune, India shared her experience with the Shiva Kavacham – “Huge blocks get removed when I listen to the Shiva Kavacham. I just get completely stable. Sometimes I can’t meditate but Shiva Kavacham changes the energy of the whole environment. A lot of times when I need to concentrate, I can focus easily after listening to it. Shiva Kavacham is our true nature. Shiva Kavacham in Mohanji’s voice is alive. It takes you beyond the mind. Mohanji’s voice is the vibration of the universe itself. It fills you up with the same vibrations by removing all the clutter and taking you back to your original state – pure light. This makes me realise how vulnerable we are to this tool called the mind. Once it is silent, everything is perfect.”

One of the devotees, Anita mentioned that she was hearing the Shiva Kavacham after taking a bath. She could feel all the glass panes on the windows in the room shaking and vibrating. This happened for as long as the Shiva Kavacham was played and it subsided thereafter. The volume was moderate and it was obviously not because of the volume that the window panes vibrated.

Mohanji had recited and recorded the Shiva Kavacham in a studio in Kerala in between trips to the passport office in a hurry. There was no way he could concentrate because of busy schedules, incoming calls and a press interview. Yet he did it within the limited time, in one go. One of his followers, Mr. Srijith, had facilitated the arrangements to do the recording. Unfortunately, he could  not get a copy. He requested a local devotee of Mohanji in Palakkad who promptly transferred it to Srijith’s phone.

On a later day, when he was travelling with his family in his car, his wife requested him to play it in the car via Bluetooth. Realizing the sacredness of the Shiva Kavacham, and remembering Mohanji’s instructions, he initially declined saying that it was not supposed to be played casually in the car. However his wife and family insisted and he finally gave in and proceeded to play it on his mobile phone. To his surprise, after completion of the chant, the mobile phone went dead. He tried various methods but it refused to start.

Once he reached home, he went to a service center to get it repaired. They tried their best with it for several days but they could neither repair it nor diagnose what was wrong with it. They finally gave up and said that it was beyond repair. Not taking their word, he went to two other service centers to get a second opinion and third opinion, but the same drama played out. They couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. After being repeatedly told that the mobile was as good as dead, he finally gave up on it and handed it to his two year old daughter to play with it.

His daughter is deeply connected to Mohanji. While playing with it, his daughter starting gesturing to him while pointing at the mobile phone screen saying “BABA. BABA.” He was deeply shocked to see that the mobile phone had been switched on with a picture of Mohanji on the screen. The child always called Mohanji “BABA” even though they tried to coax her to call him Mohanji. He told the local devotee, who had given him the copy, that he had learnt his lesson. He had received a precious gift but had not treated it with the respect that it deserved. Hence, this entire episode served as a reminder for the same.

Bhavan, also from Kerala, got a copy of the Shiva Kavacham from one of the local Mohanji devotees. On receiving it, he decided to play it on his mobile phone to check it out. But after a while, the sound coming from the earphone stopped by itself. He tried to figure what was wrong and eventually came to the conclusion that the earphone was damaged. He was a bit surprised by the occurrence since the earphones were working perfectly fine a while back. He later went and purchased another set of earphones from the shop. He then proceeded to play the Shiva Kavacham again and the same thing happened all over again. He couldn’t believe it that two sets of earphones that were perfectly working could get damaged. He called up the local devotee and related the sequence of events to him. The local devotee chided him for treating the Shiva Kavacham so casually and asked him to, henceforth, treat it as a powerful technique that needs to be treated with reverence. Bhavan took this message to heart.

I wanted to share two experiences that I had with the Shiva Kavacham. I had instantly felt its powerful effects when I first listened to it with deep concentration in Mohanji’s presence. At that time, Mohanji had categorically mentioned that the Shiva Kavacham should not be heard more than three times in a day.

Later on, I had a misguided brainwave that if one hearing had so much power, I could significantly amplify its effects by playing it all night while I was sleeping. When I did this for the second night in a row, I awoke in the middle of the night and observed a white mist covering the ceiling. In the center of the mist was a bald head with two huge eyes staring back at me.

Since I have always been scared of ghosts and the bodyless entities, that would have normally scared the crap out of me. However, this sight just made me curious. No fear at all, which was surprising. Then the thought of Mohanji immediately occurred to me. As if on cue, the vision instantly disappeared and the ceiling looked normal again.

Subsequently, I related this experience to Mohanji. Mohanji told me that the entity was a Shiva gana that got attracted to the powerful energy field of Shiva created by my inadvertent act of playing it continuously for so long. Mohanji reproached me for treating the Shiva Kavacham so casually.

Since Shiva encompasses all the energies in the universe, the Shiva ganas come in all varieties – from evil to benign. We never know who may show up to greet us! Further, our constitution may be unable to handle the high energies generated via this practice causing serious imbalances. Luckily for me, Mohanji’s protection saved the day.

This was not enough of a lesson for me. I am a slow learner and, as mentioned earlier, need repeated lessons to drive the message home and hammer it in place. I finally learnt it only after I had another misguided experience.

During travel, I decided to take some time off to do my Kriya practice. I went into an inner room and locked the door to avoid getting disturbed. My fertile mind cooked up another brainwave of increasing the efficacy of Kriya by listening to the Shiva Kavacham while doing Kriya. A little while into the practice, the door opened with a loud creaking sound.

Since I had locked the door, I was surprised but kept my eyes closed assuming that the latch may have come loose. As if in response, the door creaked again with an even louder sound. I immediately opened my eyes but nothing was amiss. On finishing my Kriya practice, I checked the latch and it was fine. Mysteriously, the door had unlocked by itself.

When I related this experience to Mohanji, Mohanji told me, “I came there to kick your butt”. This time, Mohanji firmly told me not to treat the Shiva Kavacham casually and to cease all experimentations immediately. He said that Kriya is extremely sacred and insisted not to mix anything with Kriya. Same with the Shiva Kavacham . This time round, I got the message loud and clear.

In closing, I hope that the experiences will inculcate a sense of gratitude in the readers for any gifts that are received through the grace of a Master, induce them to treat the gifts with utmost respect and reverence and drive them to actively use the gifts consciously, consistently, persistently, and with complete awareness to further their spiritual growth.

Is Mohanji a Real Guru?

This is a question that we all ask at some point in our relationship with Mohanji. Whether we are disciples, devotees, well wishers, just curious or even cynical, at some time in our contact with Mohanji we will ask if he is really a Guru, or someone we can just learn from or just another fraud. In my experience, Mohanji himself, does not make it easy with his all so subtle ways and teachings. There are no lightning bolts from the sky or him going into a trance and speaking differently or him levitating (well, usually). He just is … He is simple and unassuming. And in his simplicity, the mind and intellect will naturally ask this question: Is Mohanji a real Guru?

Mohanji - Ami Imzaia Before we go on, we should quickly define a guru. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a Guru as “a religious teacher and spiritual guide in Hinduism”. But in truth a Guru is much more than this. There have been many interpretations to the word Guru (and thus the role). Some say “Gu” means darkness and “Ru” means light, indicating that the Guru takes you from darkness into light.

The Guru Gita says “Gu” means beyond qualities and “Ru” means devoid of form, thus giving attributes to the Guru. Guru also means “heavy” or “weighty”, and thus is compared to a weight that holds paper down and prevents it from flying away. A Guru similarly holds the disciples mind down and prevents it from flying away with the senses. In the musings of my mind, I sat thinking about this. I asked myself if Mohanji is a real Guru.

If I thought about all the things I have read about Mohanji then the answer is easy, but I wanted to assess this from my own personal experience. I began thinking about things that I perceived directly about Mohanji to answer this question. As always, we should look at the examples of beings that we trust to objectively assess a situation. Who better to ask about a Guru than Hanumanji and Vibhisanji. They were supreme devotees, praised by everyone. If they reached such heights of spiritual glory, they certainly will be able to teach us how to choose a Guru.

Hanumanji first served Sugreeva who was hiding in a cave from his brother Bali. At this time Hanumanji’s powers remained dormant and Sugreeva could not manifest them in Hanumanji. But as soon as Hanumanji met Shri Ram, he knew that he was his master and Shri Ram manifested Hanumanji’s dormant abilities. This teaches us two very important lessons. A true Guru is one that does not have any fear and secondly has the ability to manifest change in a disciple. Can I find these qualities in Mohanji from my own experience?

When Mohanji was in South Africa, we were driving together to the Ganesha temple. On our way, at a four way intersection, an oncoming car sudden turns to his right, even though we had right of way. I slammed the break, and stopped before hitting him. Then I noticed Mohanji’s arm stretched over my chest. This was Mohanji’s instinctive reaction to protect me rather than placing his hands over himself to protect his own body. This shows the absence of fear for himself and protection for someone else, just like Shri Ram.

A few days ago while at the gym, I was looking at someone swimming in the pool. I was using the bicycle closest to the pool and looking at the swimmer and the water. Then suddenly it struck me. I am near water! I have a phobia for large bodies of water and before Mohanji, I found it very difficult to even walk near a pool. I used to feel dizzy and nauseous. But now, without even realising it, I’m cycling near a large swimming pool. Ok, so that is a check for Hanumanji’s two lessons.

Vibishan was very dedicated to Ravana until he learned of Shri Ram. He left Ravana and took shelter under Shri Ram’s feet. Ravana eventually kicked Vibishan out of Lanka but Shri Ram made him King of Lanka. This teaches us many things, one of which is that a true Guru is not egotistical and freely gives to his disciple. It is not just about knowledge. Ravan was a brilliant scholar, even greater than most sages of his time, but Vibishan still left him. In Mohanji, you do not find a trace of egotistical personality traits or a power mongering nature. And this is shown by what makes Mohanji and his tradition special: Shaktipat. Mohanji never once said that it is vital that only he is there physically to give shaktipat. Neither did he ever say that if he is not physically present we must use a photo of him. No instead he initiated people to act as mediums. Why was this necessary? He could have dominated and shown absolute power if he did not do this. Mohanji does not need me or other initiates to be there to deliver shaktipat. But because Mohanji has no ego, because it is his nature to give, and because he loves us…he honours us with the ability to act as a facilitator for shaktipat. So he fulfills Vibishanas lessons too.

Scripture declares a Guru as having three qualities: (1) “One whose vision (all five senses) is stable without the need of an object of desire (even God) for staring”; (2) one whose mind is stable without meditation or any need for any support”; and (3) one whose Prana (breath or energy) is stable without performing conscious Pranayama, She or He alone is the Yogi, or the Guru worthy of our attention and services.” I have seen all these three qualities in Mohanji.

Mohanji - Manjari Rao Mohanji’s senses are all under complete control. When he stayed in South Africa, I noticed that he was equally happy whether you gave him bread and butter or a meal with five curries to eat. Although in physical pain and tired, he still conducted all the meditations he had to, went to all the functions he had to and fulfilled his obligations. So that fulfills the first criteria.

As for the second quality, we all have seen pictures of his brain wave scan that scientifically show that his mind is always in a meditative state. Mohanji mind is always under control. MohanJi has scolded me and a second later he was praising me. He never gets angry the way we do. His mind is always still.

And finally the third quality. I have never seen Mohanji do any pranayama. But his prana is so balanced and strong that when he did pranpratishta at Merudada Ashram, I felt cold marble murthis turn warm and a hot “breeze” shoot out of a linga. Of course there are more incidents that confirm all this but I wanted to only use what I experienced and saw with my own eyes. And from all of this, undoubtedly, MOHANJI IS A SADGURU.

The Mystery and the Master – Who is Mohanji?

Everyone will agree with me that something attracts one to Mohanji. It could be his energy, his consciousness, his penetrating eyes, his unconditional love for all, his genuinity, his spontaneity, his sense of humor, his bluntness, his honesty, his compassion, his insights on spirituality, truthfulness, display of anger, or just his mere presence. Mohanji is a mystery to many. Many people think they know Mohanji and gets totally confused when they discover that the man whom they thought they knew is beyond their understanding. Many people have left him, disillusioned because of their own reasons or Mohanji’s plain simplicity. Mohanji hardly displays his true potential. He gives one only what he or she needs or deserves. That may confuse many. Where is the so-called enlightenment? Where are the altered states of existence? Then, one must ask oneself. “Do I have the eyes to see it, even if it is displayed in front of me?” It is our inability and not his. He expresses himself or his true nature all the time, masked in simplicity. He does deliver his promises. We fail to see.

Who is Mohanji? What is his consciousness? I sincrely pray, let me have those eyes to see Him.

I am connecting to Mohanji’s consciousness and writing this. May dear Mohanji write through me! May I be used as his mouth piece to narrate our experiences at Maha Kumbh Mela and beyond.

Maha Kumbh Mela 2013. I had the privilege of being with Mohanji and 40 others to enjoy the holy dips on three auspicious days at Allahabad, India in February 2013. We arrived at Allahabad on 14th morning. We took dips on three auspicious days such as 15th(Vasant Panchami), 17th (Ratha Saptami) and 18th(Durgashtamai). All at Brahma Muhurtha between 3-4 am along with Mohanji! What else could we ask for?

May I take this opportunity to narrate a few of the incidents that happened during this time. The first is a revelation about Mohanji which another saint disclosed for our understanding. This made us get a better view of the unassuming saint who walks and talks to us and often we take for granted!

We had stayed at ISCKON tents in Allahabad. Morning of 17 Feb 2013, Bala Sai walked into Mohanji’s tent at Kumbh Mela along with another saint and his 11 odd disciples. The saint who accompanied Bala Sai was connected to Gorakhnath Baba of Nath tradition. Gorakh Babaji enters his body and starts to speak. As all the visitors assembled inside the tent and made themselves comfortable, this saint requested permission to click a picture with Mohanji. Mohanji agreed and they stood together for the picture. Mohanji put his hand partially hugging the saint and suddenly the saint shivered, went into a trance and started talking to him. Soon after the picture, he said, “I would like to talk about Mohanji” and he started talking about Mohanji in “Pali” Language sitting on his chair. Later, as suggested by Bala Sai, he sat down on the rug between the cots. Mohanji also sat down in front of him, facing him. Then, he disclosed the truth of Mohanji’s existence in a classy Tamil verse. The translation is given below.

Quote,

“This place is miraculous and this time is more miraculous. Lord Shiva is here with mother Amba present to talk to this child. Who do you think this is who sits here? He is descended from the lineage of Gorakha, many births having served Shiva, bound to his feet. This child here now and he is at many places working many things. Shiva is here and mother Amba is here, my child; and we have come to let you know some things through this body. He is blessed Siddha of Shiva, Gorakha Himself. He will serve material life in a small village in Tamilnadu. He will attain a tremendous light body / energy body in a short time. In this place you are Mohanan, and you are blessed with tremendous powers, and these come to you from Lord Datta Himself and Gorakha coming from many births of serving Shiva; hence blessed abundantly by Him. Many blessings come to you from, mother Anasuya. Many miracles are due to happen yet to you, through you, by His grace. Where ever you go, there will be prosperity, and grace. Whichever holy place or enterprise you even think of with your mind, will become glorious, prosperous and full of grace. This Gorakha is telling you. You have done many great miracles in your previous births and this birth and there are many more to come. Due to the merits you have accumulated, this is your final birth and in this birth in the latter half of your life you are / will be working with glorious golden body of light, no longer gross body. This will be shown with great many miracles, blessings, and grace which will flow through you. This is what Gorakha and the blessed Datta and Shiva Shakti tells you and we bless you, ending this. You know all.”

He started calling Mohanji “Son of Shiva”, and at one point Gorakhnath Babaji said “He is Myself”. This was an overwhelming experience for all who were present. After this revelation, he went on talking about Sumit, Shashank, Ravi, Palak and many others. He revealed further about Mohanji while talking to them and he also explained why it is extremely important for them to stay with deeper faith with Mohanji. He said you all here with Mohanji to have Mukti (Liberation). He also spoke about Mohanji’s ashram “Datta Tapovan”. He mentioned that “Millions of Siddhas” will come and stay and work in the ashram, once Mohanji moves in there. Lot of Annadhan will happen. Many people will come here and serve. He also mentioned that both Maharshi Atri and Mata Anasuya (Parents of Lord Datta) will be present in the ashram. That place would become a major Saktisthal (place of power), where people will get benefitted even as they step in.

When experience is given, heart knows the truth.

Just a day earlier, some of us were discussing and contemplating if we are sharing our experiences with Mohanji at all, or if it is needed at all. With this experience from Gorakh Babaji, we had no doubt left in our minds that it is important for us to share our experiences or else the world will miss some deep truths of human existence. We are just doing the world a big seva by telling, guiding, instilling hope and vouching that there are numerous dimensions to our existence and many stay hidden due to our own mental blockage. It is important to share; never know which mind would open up to truth and larger realities.

Evolve spiritually with laughter… spirituality is not to make one’s life serious….. Mohanji

The three dips that we took during Brahma Muhurth were amazing and refreshing too. We walked from our tents at the ISKCON campus. Ghats were roughly 2 and a half km away. Interestingly, our tents were in an area demarcated and called as “Bilwa Vana” or the forest of Bilwa, the favorite plant of Shiva! An apt abode for Mohanji and his children! While walking towards the bathing ghats, most of us found it difficult to catch up with Mohanji’s pace. He was walking or rather floating in great speed. Indeed, “Beat the tamas by embracing rajas”. For some of us, it was too difficult to shed the comfort of a thick cozy blanket and walk towards freezing cold water on a foggy cold morning at 2.30 am. This was the test! Most of us dared the objections of our tamasic mind and got over their inertia and Mohanji, as always, led by example.

Walk to the ghat for dip at early morning 2.30am in Alahabad… We were contineously chanting aloud while walking. That speed, the energy, the deep desire for dip and faith on the consciousness… undescribable..

Sumit always ensured our path is right and directly towards the bathing ghats without any detour. Once we took the dip, all the fear and apprehensions of cold and cold itself went away and many of us, who intended to take 9 dips ended up much more, lovingly and willingly. Many of us actually experienced a tremendous purification, burdens of our past removed and also a shift in our awareness. It is the faith and surrender with which we take the dip that is important. Dip should not be a mechanical act! We have to shed our comfort zones to evolve.

Shashank’s 80 year old father was a striking example of determination. Shashank and his brother held him on both sides, he walked all the way to ghats and he had his lifetime experience. He was fully satisfied. All those who came were happy and completely satisfied, in their own way.

While at Kumbh, apart from the visit of Bala Sai, Gorakh Baba and their disciples, Mohanji also met Paramahamsa Nithyananda, Swami Vishwananda, Swami Srila Navayogendra Maharaj of ISKCON and the loving mother Kunti Mata from Jammu, apart from many seers, saints and sadhus that we kept encountering. Paramahamsa Nithyananda, Mohanji and Swami Vishwananda also had dinner together on 14th evening.

Mohanji and our whole group also visited Vihangam Yoga ashram in Allahabad. We were served a sumptuous lunch at the ashram. Mohanji and all of us were lovingly received and honored by Sant Namdeoji Maharaj, the son of Saint Swtantradeoji Maharaj. There were beautiful discourses and introductions to Vihangam Yoga by the acharyas. Finally, Sant Swtantradeoji Maharaj himself came in, hugged and honored Mohanji. Mohanji explained that he felt at home and he felt deeply humbled by their genuine love and sincerity.

Earlier, Sant Swatantradeoii Maharaj, Sant Namdeoji Maharaj and Sant Pravar Shri Vigyandeoji Maharaj had visited Oman in October 2012. Mohanji had received them at the airport and later, they had dinner at his place. Sant Swatantradeoji Maharaj also initiated Mohanji and Biba in three levels of Vihangam Yoga, at Mohanji’s home in Oman. Mohanji says “I feel deeply honored by this loving gesture of the guru, the grandson of the great master Anant Sadguru Sadafaldeoji Maharaj, visiting my humble abode and doing us this honor”. Mohanji prostrated at his feet in gratitude. Sri Namdeoji Maharaj, in his speech mentioned about Mohanji as a perfect example of egolessness. And he mentioned his experience when he saw Mohanji at Muscat airport in jeans and T shirt – totally unassuming and never caring about his image, stature or looks. He said that only a person who has crossed over the boundaries of his ego can be so careless about his image or what people will think about him. Mohanji is a perfect example of a true guru of modern times; he walks his talk and he walks the same earth where too much pretensions and image making are indeed happening.

Mohanji addressed the gathering with few words, but, he indeed mentioned about his sorrow in seeing competition among spiritual leaders. He said, “Kumbh Mela should be a platform for unification. Everyone should come together for the welfare of the world. We have 7 Billion people to take care, elevate, and show the true light of God. True saints can never have insecurities. There should be no competition. Those who are of the highest elevation cannot have dualities. It is time to preserve dharma, beyond individual egos”. Mohanji spoke the same thing to all the saints and acharyas whom he met at Maha Kumbh Mela.

This was Maha Kumbh Mela which happens only after 144 years. We were indeed lucky to have attended it – that too with Mohanji. I feel, even though we have been with him, hearing, talking, touching and feeling him almost always, we are yet to “KNOW HIM”. We are yet to know his consciousness. He behaves ordinary. He easily conceals his true identities. He laughs and makes others laugh and slips past. He gives something small and escapes and expects you to realize it and get back to him to claim the higher that he is indeed capable of giving. He needs to be explored, quite patiently. These were the thoughts of many of us who traveled with him to Maha Kumbh Mela and to Ayodhya and Banares.

Many events and visits have happened in last 6 months. We were continuously on the move, and times were so demanding that could write about those events. Next blog that follows is about visit to Ayodhya and Banares.
