In the company of Masters

By Eric Elbers, Canada

The story of the MyDattatreya website

KEEPING GOOD COMPANY

It is often said that travellers on the spiritual path should keep good company. Being an avid reader and living in a household where the members generally have other than spiritual interests, I found reading about the life and teachings of spiritual masters an inspiring and enriching experience. Paramahamsa Yogananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Anandamayi Ma, Amritananda Mayi Ma, and many other elevated human beings became my daily company, my teachers and my spiritual nourishment.

Therefore, it was only a matter of time until I would learn about Shirdi Sai Baba, his life story as penned down in the Sai Sat Charitra, and next, the amazing story of Sathya Sai Baba. When reading about these masters, they would, as it were, come alive for me and indeed did become my daily companions. It was also a time when I was in transition from a spiritual path that had centered on the Sound Current and the Radha Soami teachings to more broad-based Hinduism. I felt attracted to Amritananda Mayi Ma and her teachings on compassion. I recognized that my reading, to a large extent, was an intellectual occupation, and I felt drawn to more heart-based spirituality shown by the amazing ‘hugging saint.’

MEETING MOHANJI

Then, in 2017, in an honorary magazine issue dedicated to Sathya Sai Baba, I read an article by Mohanji, in which he told his life story and his relationship with Sathya Sai Baba, who had been a turning point in his life. I felt immediately attracted to Mohanji and saw an opportunity to help an up-and-coming spiritual master in his mission. With time, a master attracts a core group of devotees around him who help and support him. A master who has been teaching for decades may have thousands of devotees and a hierarchical structure in the organization, but a master who is beginning his mission may still be approachable and welcome devotees to help him in his work. Such a Master was Mohanji. I emailed Mohanji and requested permission to start a meditation group based on his guided meditations. Very shortly, I received a reply that Mohanji had already become aware of my request even before it had reached him and had given his blessings.

In the summer of 2018, Mohanji came to Canada to dedicate an ashram in Ontario with a prana pratishta ceremony to inaugurate and empower the Ganesha, Dattatreya and Shirdi Sai Baba idols. That became an opportunity to meet face-to-face with Mohanji, who was very kind and enquired about my spiritual journey and how I had learned about him. I told Mohanji that it was my desire to serve him in his mission and become an ’outstanding’ disciple to him. This wish was fulfilled the following year when I was invited to participate in the Acharya training at the Canadian ashram, led by Mohanji himself. Mohanji told us that the correct way to measure living masters is not how many devotees they attract, but how many new masters they develop. The Acharya program was designed to develop such ‘budding’ masters. What a blessing to have been invited to participate!

DATTATREYA TRADITION

During the Acharya training program in the summer of 2019, which lasted four days, I heard Mohanji many times refer to ‘the Tradition.’ I had no clue what tradition he was talking about, but it sounded intriguing to me, and soon thereafter, I learned about the Dattatreya tradition. That’s when I realized my love for Dattatreya. Even though I had grown up in a devoted Christian family [the Dutch Reformed Church], my intense reading had groomed me to recognize the immense stature and power of the Dattatreya tradition—the tradition of Avadhutas and liberation. To me, Dattatreya was not just another spiritual master, deity, or a great story, but I recognized him as the original, divine, spiritual teacher [Adi Guru] taking on many embodiments. This teacher is Divine Consciousness Itself, Supreme Reality, taking many incarnations to engage with souls to guide them back home. All the Masters I had read about were part of Dattatreya, the Supreme Teacher. This Teacher is Supreme Consciousness Itself, loving his emanations, Souls, and guiding them to Himself.

I felt I needed to give expression to my love for Dattatreya and wrote to Mohanji that I wished to work on a website dedicated to Dattatreya, documenting the great masters of the Dattatreya tradition to let people know about their lives and sublime teachings. Mohanji replied back “Yes, this needs to be done.” Encouraged, in November of 2019, I started a Facebook Group dedicated to the ‘Peerless Masters of the Dattatreya Tradition.’ Since its start in November 2019, this group has grown to more than 2250 followers, sharing news and stories about the Dattatreya Masters.

In the spring of 2020, during a Zoom Call with Mohanji Acharyas, Mohanji suddenly asked, “Is Eric there?” When I responded, he asked me to start working on the website for the Dattatreya tradition. Then, with the help of the Acharya Board, an international group of nine Acharyas was formed, and we started working on the documentation of the life and teaching of the Dattatreya Avatars and Masters. Thus, the MyDattatreya website was born. Seeing the success of the ‘Friends of Dattatreya’ Facebook Group, a Facebook Page about the Dattatreya Masters, named ‘MyDattatreya’ followed in the summer of 2020. This Page has now attracted 1348 followers.

Lord Dattatreya with Mohanji, Contemporary Datta Master

SHIRDI 2022

Due to the Covid pandemic from 2020 to 2022, travelling was restricted, and very few events were organized. So, as soon as it was announced that a Mohanji-led trip to Shirdi, India, would be held in December 2022, I decided to attend. It had been a long-standing wish of mine to visit the home of Dattatreya Avatar Shirdi Sai Baba. This was the chance. I also had desired to meet with Devi Amma, a living Saint in Bangalore, and spiritual daughter of Sage Agastya and Mother Lopamudra, and seek her blessings. Fortunately, I was able to combine both visits and was graciously welcomed by Devi Amma during a 30-minute private visit.

When we were speaking about Lord Dattatreya and the Masters of the tradition, Devi Amma shared a very interesting insight. She said that the incarnation of Dattatreya, as the embodied trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, had occurred due to the Divine Mother, the Shakti energy, requesting Supreme Consciousness, Shiva, to take birth as the trinity, so devotees could directly connect with the trinity of creation, sustenance and dissolution. Shiva agreed, and the well-known birth story of Dattatreya enacts this. It illustrates that it was the trinity which visited Anasuya, the pious wife of Sage Atri, during lunchtime while her husband was absent and tested her piety. And it was at Anasuya’s request [symbolizing Shakti] that the three gods agreed to be born to her as the trinity; hence, the child was named Dattatreya [Given Trinity].

BABA’S LEELA

Baba made me do an involuntary parikrama (circumambulation) when visiting Baba’s Samadhi Mandir for the first time in Shirdi. I entered the temple around 4:30 pm and, as is the custom, took off my shoes at the entrance I had arrived at (there are five gates) and placed them in a nearby rack. It was extremely busy in the temple with long lineups, and it took about one hour to complete paying my honours to Baba. By the time I got out, it had become dark, and moreover, I exited at a different location which I did not recognize.

I had never been to Baba’s temple. This is a large place with buildings and crowds everywhere. It was very, very busy, but I had no choice but to start walking around the temple in my socks, looking for the rack with my shoes. Many different entrances, crowds everywhere, but no shoes I recognized. So, I made another round, and then another, and then another. No easy walking on socks on the very uneven, pebbly pavement. Clumsy and uncomfortable. After about an hour, I became more and more confused and shared my plight with a guard. Actually, three guards [trinity?] and it was the third guard who took pity on me and took me around the temple (again), visiting all places with shoe racks. And there are many!

Finally, I was ready to give up the search and buy flip-flops for the rest of the trip, assuming my shoes had found a new owner. However, after another half hour of walking around the temple, right at the very end of the search, I spotted my shoes near Gate 3, where they of course had been from the very beginning. I was elated and relieved but also exhausted from circumambulating Baba’s Samadhi Mandir on socks for 90 minutes. Only Baba knows why he wanted me to do a 90-minute parikrama around his temple on socks, but in the end, he had mercy upon me.

SURPRISES

Another interesting and very heart-touching experience happened on the final morning in Shirdi, on the day of my departure back home to Canada. During the previous evening, I had met a group of Mohanji devotees from the Philippines, and we had discussed returning early in the morning to visit Dwarkamai, the place where Baba had sat next to his Dhuni [sacred fire] and receive visitors. I had not been able to find the place yet, but it could be challenging to schedule a visit because to be there at a quiet time, one has to start very early in the morning. And it was going to be a long day of travelling.

But, surprisingly, I found myself awake and quite alert at 2:00 am, so I decided to make my way to the Temple. I was very happy to see my Philippine friends again; the temple grounds were still very quiet, and we had a wonderful time walking the grounds and spending time sitting and meditating in the Dwarkamai.

Two notable surprises occurred on that last morning in Shirdi. The first one happened while we were circumambulating the beautiful and graceful Neem tree, still alive, under which Baba had chosen to sit during his first visit after arriving in Shirdi as a young lad well over one hundred and fifty years ago.  He sat there in meditation, rain or shine, and appeared to Shirdi inhabitants as an introvert yogi, having arrived mysteriously from an unknown source. While we circled the tree, suddenly, a few Neem leaves gently whirled down and landed at our feet. Excited and deeply grateful, we collected and shared these few precious leaves from the otherwise bare pavement since they are such a rare and prized possession for Baba devotees!

Next came a really big surprise. While ready to leave the grounds after having spent time meditating in the Dwarkamai, a Temple Guard suddenly appeared from nowhere and handed me a large gift bag wrapped in orange cloth. “Here, this is for you,” he said and walked away. I was stunned and surprised. My friends excitedly said, Oh, look, you have received a gift from Baba! What a blessing!” When I opened the bag, I found it was filled with diverse prasad: flowers, coconuts, fruits, sweets, gift cloth, etc. Indeed, a sweet blessing and departing gift from Baba.

NADA, THE SOUND CURRENT

We all have different constitutions, unique talents and weaknesses, and unique histories. On top of that, we travel different trajectories towards our shared destination, a complete merger with Supreme Consciousness, also called The Divine or God. Some of us are quick-witted and quick learners; others are sensitive with a great capacity for feeling and compassion. Some of us are visual, some auditory, some intellectual and some intuitive. For me, the journey has never been accompanied by great visual experiences or cinemascopic adventures, although at times I wished it would be like that. Instead, the Divine has come as a cat on quiet feet. He has come as a whisper, an insight, a calm knowingness. While others report remarkable meetings with a diversity of Masters, to me, the Divine Presence, the Master, and Mohanji in particular,  came as a quiet companion, a deep feeling in the heart, a nudge, a wink. Rumi called this Presence ‘The Friend.’ I call it my Companion. It is Consciousness Itself, also represented by Dattatreya.

There is no way we can separate ourselves from Consciousness, nor can Consciousness separate Itself from us, since Consciousness is what we are. We ARE THAT, Consciousness Itself. We are living, breathing and moving consciousness. All talk about Self-Realization is about removing the veil of illusion that we are something else. There is no need to grow into anything, to change anything, or to become something, because we are THAT already. We are Dattatreya.

In essence, we are victims of identity theft, the mind having stolen our true identity. Therefore, it can be said that we are victims of misidentification. We identify ourselves with an illusory personality produced by the mind. The master helps to lift this veil of illusion when our legs are strong and stable enough to carry the weight of our true nature.

My spiritual journey started nearly fifty years ago by connecting with the Audible Life Stream, also known as the Sound Current, Nada or Shabda, the Voice of God resonating through the universes. This sound of creative energy is always with us. It sings through creation in a divine play of creation, sustenance and dissolution. It starts as the primordial sound of AUM and branches into the Music of the Spheres, God’s Voice resounding in His Creation.

Nada, the audible Life Stream, the light and sound of God

Over time the Sound Current has become my constant companion, a high-pitched eeee, at a slightly different pitch in each ear, merging in the centre of the head. It is the flow of the creative energy, the kundalini through the nadis.

During Dattatreya mantra chanting on Zoom, each Thursday morning at 7:00 am [PT]], at some point, the Sound Current ‘descends’ and becomes a presence that takes over. Hands and feet start tingling with the live energy flowing through the body system. It is like being plugged into a high-voltage electric wire. That is the Sound Current, the presence of Dattatreya.

These chanting sessions are open to all, and participants have reported also experiencing this high energy. By connecting to the chanter and the chanter connecting to the Sound Current, together we are wired to this Divine energy that flows through the universe as the creative, sustaining and dissolving force. The force of the Trinity. The Energy and Presence of Dattatreya.

Om Dram Sri Gurudeva Datta

Humbly submitted at the feet of my Master Mohanji and my Lord Dattatreya.

Girnar – Walking with Dattatreya

Sjarn Mansoor, South Africa

“Girnar is like walking on the edge of a razor blade!”

Mohanji knows all our deepest wishes and desires and fulfils them for us. It has been a wonderful blessing to be allowed to come to Girnar. “I am with you!” Mohanji always says this! His presence is always with us and taking this pilgrimage in his name was an unforgettable time connecting with him while walking and experiencing his energy in Girnar.

A few years ago, I saw photos of this majestic mountain that is older than the Himalayas, its sharp outline cutting like a razor through the sky. It has very mysterious energy and called to me like a magnet.

Helplessly my first thought was “I have to go to Girnar!” I had no idea what the significance of the mountain was or that it was the home of our Dattatreya who for 12,000 years sat in meditation at the very pinnacle and still meditates here. A place of inhospitable solitude exposed to the elements of mountain winds, rain, storms, wild animals, fierce heat and cold.

When it was announced that Mohanji was doing a 3-day pilgrimage in February, my heart sank as I had already booked my flight and would arrive too late to go with him. I decided to go on my own as there was enough time to get there after Varanasi. This pilgrimage has been one of trust and surrender. For the first time, I felt really out of my comfort zone and questioned the safety of this expedition.

Junagadh is a small town where few people speak English and very few foreigners visit here. Going out at 4 am, trusting strangers to get me to Girnar and walking on my own in the dark was very unsettling as fears started surfacing. Immediately, all I could do was surrender everything to Mohanji. Having come this far with his grace, there was no turning back.

The walk up Girnar started at 04:45 am in the dark. I felt I was reasonably walking fit but going up very steep mountain steps was very challenging for my knees and ankles. On reaching the top, I realised there was only one way to get down! More walking!

Along the path, I had glimpses of walking this way before. I connected as a sadhu and an old woman and felt the presence of the Nath Masters watching over me.

Walk

It was inspiring to watch older women walking. With such grace, they floated up the mountain effortlessly. One, in particular, must have been at least 70 yet she walked with such lightness of spirit as though her body was made of air. Her 2 companions kept up with her and the trio effortlessly ascended and glided down past me as I was still struggling to make my way up.

Another elderly lady had the most beautiful bhaav. She would stop now and again just as I had caught up with her. She would sit in meditation, eyes closed and a wide smile with the most blissful joy radiating from her as she connected deeply to Dattatreya, the mountain, the wind, the sky, and the sun, at one with everything around her. Then she would shake her bells; do a little dance, exclaiming with joy her thanks to Datta for letting her be here, her face lit up with such love and devotion. It was such a pleasure to walk with her.

These ladies invigorated me and were like guardian angels encouraging me by their example, lifting my energy to keep going!

A lot of people turned back at the lower levels as I didn’t see them again. There is a sense of camaraderie the higher up you go. A young sadhu huffed and puffed his way up as well. We would laugh every time we caught up with each other to take a rest break. He eventually gave me his card to visit his ashram in Nasik, Ujjain and took a selfie of us.

Pic 3

There is a flat space just before you get to the temple. People have left offerings and broken coconuts there. It’s buzzing with flies and not very clean. A beautiful looking, young, homeless man sat on the bench. I looked at his blackened bare feet, matted hair, and his clothes in tatters. A little crazy but completely immersed within his self, he radiated sweetness and peace. Not asking for anything, Girnar was his home. I gave him a packet of dry fruits and nuts. He looked at me curiously and took it.

Temple

At the top of the mountain peak is a tiny Datta temple with his footprints embedded in the rock. Dattatreya sat and meditated here for 12000 years. The mind cannot comprehend this. I went in for the darshan of Datta’s murti, gazed at his feet and chanted his mantra. All I asked was to be a better disciple for Mohanji. A wave of emotion overcame me. It cut deeply into me and I just wanted to cry my heart out whenever I touch on this. A huge burden of emotion had been lifted out of my energy system. Whatever blockage that has been sitting in me was taken out, dissolved and released.

gurumurti-pavan-pad-chinhe

2 sadhus were sitting in this small temple space, precariously balanced literally on the tip of the mountain top. They radiated such peace and sweetness, with certain energy of being completely at one within themselves. One was curious and started speaking to me.

I told him about Mohanji, that he is our Nath Guru and that Dattatreya is the deity that we worship. Then I showed him a photo of Mohanji on my phone and said that he was here around the 12th of February. He took Mohanji’s energy in and I could see him connecting to Baba. He nodded in appreciation then scrolled through more photos. He then said I must go down to the Shree Kamandal Kund Sansthan Ashram for breakfast and prasad. Unfortunately, the space is so tiny on the platform you cannot sit there for very long. I made my way down to the rather austere Ashram and had darshan of Dattatreya’s akhand dhuni which burns perpetually and was served the most delicious prasad and breakfast to revive me from the climb up.

Strangely, the whole climb up and down Girnar, my brain went dead. All I could do was chant for the 15 hours of climbing. No other thoughts could be maintained. They evaporated as soon as they started forming, it was very strange. The entire day passed in an almost thoughtless state.

As I started the very steep downward climb my left knee and ankle were on fire. The tendons were tearing and burning with pain. Each time I put weight on my left leg, it felt like my knee and ankle were going to dislocate. The only option was to walk sideways and use the bamboo pole to support the weight off my leg for 10 000 very slow, painful and careful steps! Chanting Datta’s name, I remained in an empty state.

What should have taken 4 hours to get down ended up taking 9 hours. People seeing me walking so slowly offered to take me down on the doli for Rs. 2000. I had to decline as I only had Rs. 500 on me.

It felt like Datta’s way of keeping me in Girnar for as long as possible. The last 2 hours became endless. The sun was setting and it was rapidly becoming dark, the path was very empty and again I felt very uncomfortable being on my own. Eventually, it became a breaking point where all I wanted to do was cry and just curl up on a rock and sleep in the woods. The pain was too much and it felt like I would never get off the mountain. All I could do was chant and pray to Mohanji to get me to the bottom. I started chanting the Mai-Tri Gayatri, for Baba to heal my knee and ankle to complete the walk down. A surge of light and energy flowed through me as Baba took me through the last hour of the walk.

holy-kamandal-kund

At various places, I stopped and had darshan, often not knowing what I was looking at but just being very drawn to places. Datta’s dhuni was strange, I kept asking what am I looking at as I took it in. The Kamandal Kund is a fascinating pool of vibrant turquoise green water. I was wondering what the connection was to Ganga Ma. Later I read up on Girnar and all the other points of interests along the way. Datta felt there was water in the rocks of Girnar, threw his kamandal with force, the rocks shattered and Ganga flowed out creating Kamandal Kund.

This walk for me was learning from nature with Dattatreya. In the silent spaces of Girnar, only the sun and the wind speak to you as you gaze down the sheer heights of the mountain cliffs. Large bumblebees buzz around your head, monkeys playfully chase each other, crows caw, peacocks strut around, squirrels call out and birds sing. All live in peaceful harmony on the slopes of Girnar, bringing natural peace and harmony to the environment.

But the saddest is the man who chains his cats and dogs and who leaves a trail of rubbish on this holy mountain. Plastic water bottles pour down the slopes. Discarded snack packets and abandoned shoes litter everywhere. How difficult is it to take down what you have brought with you? A cable car is being built, what more devastation will the crowds bring who are too lazy to walk up.

Hobbling back to the hotel room, I struggled to get up the steps and felt worried as to how I would be able to travel the rest of the journey by road to Mumbai and the extent of the injuries to my joints as it felt like the knee had dislocated. The next morning, as I walked to the bathroom there was not one twinge of pain. No feeling of burning in the ligaments. The knee was flexible and I could put all my weight on my foot with absolutely no discomfort. With joy and delight, I realised Mohanji had taken care of everything, the injuries were healed and it felt as though nothing had happened to my joints.

What happened on Girnar? There was a realignment of the spine. On Girnar, a vortex of energy spirals from the base of the mountain – muladhara, to the pinnacle – sahasrara. Datta connects your spine from the earth, up through your head and connects out to the Cosmic Consciousness. This brings the energy coming up the spine into a straight solid line. Whatever was blocking or distorting the flow of energy in the sushumna was dissolved and released by being on Girnar with Dattatreya.

Silence, emptiness, and clarity took its place. A renewed motivation going forward, a heart filled with love, lightness of being and a beautiful joy overflows in me. Girnar has rejuvenated me, given a deep cleansing, and realignment of my spine with Datta’s energy.

Deep gratitude to Mohanji and to Dattatreya for blessing me with this opportunity to come to Girnar.

Kailash not too far!

Kailash pilgrimage 2019. Mohanji and a group of nearly 100 yatris were at Lake Manasarovar. Thousands of miles away in a small part of South Wales, UK, in the Skanda Vale ashram, NellyAnne, Subhasree and Moushumi were doing Consciousness Kriya in the presence of the Lord Dattatreya idol. Their deep connection to Mohanji and their practice of Kriya with conviction and consistency had blessed them with incredible visions and experiences!

Incredible is the grace of Guru Mandala that through these visions of Mohanji in Kailash, it was proven yet again that when Mohanji travels on a pilgrimage, He just doesn’t take people physically, He takes everyone connected to His consciousness spiritually too!

Read on to feel the power of this grace!

By NellyAnne Noronha

I had registered my application for the Kailash trip 2019 with Mohanji. However, due to unavoidable reasons, I couldn’t make it. I accepted this as divine will and decided to go with the flow. I was reassured by Preeti Duggal ji, a core member of Mohanji family, that with Mohanji’s grace and blessings I will be able to experience the entire pilgrimage despite not being there in person. This assurance reminded me of Mohanji’s words during the satsang in Pinner in 2018 (my first meeting with Mohanji physically),

“Everyone present here is not because of a coincidence, We have all been connected for many lifetimes.”

Connection to Guru and the Tradition is shown in many ways. Another form of reassurance I received was through a sudden visit to a Sai temple in Wembley. This was certainly the call of Sai Baba! The visit to the temple became very special as unexpectedly I was able to be a part of a very sacred ritual as well as I receiving a shawl that was used to adorn Baba’s idol as a gift! The following day I saw a photo of the chief Priest of Shirdi offering a garland to Mohanji at the first meeting of all the Kailash Yatris in Kathmandu. This was indeed a reminder of the statement of Preeti Duggal ji. Experiencing Kailash Yatra with Mohanji!

The Master continued to shower his grace when I got a chance to join the ACT Foundation team for the Skanda Vale charity food stall on the 10th and 11th of August. On the 11th of August, there was also a special function of the reunion of Lord Muruga with his consorts.

After closing our food stall, Subhasree, Moushumi and I reached the hall where there was a multitude of people already sitting and enjoying the devotional bhajans. In a miraculous way, all 3 of us got some space to sit next to the Sisters right in front of the altar. We realised this was none other than Mohanji listening to the true cries of love and showering his grace on us to fulfil all our desires. Suddenly the Swami invited all 3 of us along with the community members and a few other volunteers to participate in the special ceremony of sprinkling petals of flowers to Lord Muruga and his consorts while chanting the auspicious 108 Namavali. This was beyond the ordinary and I knew from the bottom of my heart that it was Mohanji and the Guru Mandala’s blessings for us. We were closely participating in such a powerful and auspicious ritual, while the other devotees with Mohanji were at Kailash Mansarovar! The grace didn’t stop there. We even got the chance to join the procession with fire lamps in our hands going inside the main temple and we witnessed a very powerful aarti offered in the main Garbhagriha. During this I saw several Divine beings appear as beautiful lights moving up and around, dancing to unheard celestial music playing in the background, while Mohanji was blessing the devotees on the banks of Kailash Mansarovar.

Mohanji_blessing_at Manasarovar.jpg

I was deeply touched and moved to tears as I went through these divine experiences. This was no less than a direct pilgrimage to Kailash! These were truly blissful and gratifying experiences.

After these sublime experiences at the temple, we decided to visit the Lord Datta temple. The place was so serene that we all decided to do Kriya sitting in front of Lord Datta. Suddenly, I noticed a light shining from the Datta idol which was then replaced by the smiling face of Mohanji.

This was the most blissful experience for me as I felt Mohanji himself reassuring me of our connection, and my presence with him and the other devotees in Kailash.

MOhanji_with_datta3
Mohanji at the Datta Temple in Skanda Vale

My sincere gratitude to the Divinity and the entire Guru Mandala for such grace and blessings.

By Subhasree Thottungal

11th August 2019. A very auspicious day. While Mohanji and about a hundred devotees were at Kailash Manasarovar, we were in Skanda Vale during the same weekend, doing a charity food stall. The entire Skanda Vale was in bliss in celebrating the special function of the reunion of Lord Murugan with his consorts. The function brought so much awareness of the divine presence and high energy in this powerful place. I felt Mohanji’s presence there every moment. Mohanji and Skanda Vale have a special equation, which I have realised with some divine awareness, as narrated in my earlier blog, ‘The truth beyond revelations’.

Soon after the ceremonies inside the Subramanyam temple, with heightened energy and deep gratitude, Moushumi, NellyAnne and I went to the Lord Datta’s temple. It’s almost a year (1 year on 15thAugust), since this Lord Datta temple in Skanda Vale had come into existence and Mohanji had done the prana pratishta of the Lord Datta idol! As Mohanji had said at that time, a part of His soul is inside this Datta Idol! Whenever I visit here and see Lord Datta, I feel Mohanji’s presence.

Datta Prana Pratistha 1
Mohanji doing the Prana Pratistha of Lord Datta in Skanda Vale, 16th Aug 2018

When I reached the Datta temple, I felt the urge to do Kriya there. Moushumi and NellyAnne joined in too. Kriya in front of Datta took me to a different plane altogether. As if I was transported elsewhere! And then appeared this divine vision!

The vision of Mohanji in his white attire, sitting in front of Lake Mansarovar, with lots of people seated around him. The blue water of Mansarovar with tiny waves, blue sky with white clouds showing the presence of many divine beings. Though I could see many human beings, the only face that was clear was Mohanji’s.

When I finished Kriya, for a few moments, my hands were numb. I opened my eyes and looked at Datta’s face.Such a striking smile as if Mohanji was standing there and smiling at me and saying, “You wanted to see me at Mansarovar, right? Are you happy now?”

We all knew that on this same day Mohanji was at Mansarovar with all the other devotees. Mohanji had assured us, we will be with him, in spirit. How true is that!

The vision I had during Kriya showed this through the divine communion with my Guru.

Mohanji_Manasarovar_2019.jpeg
Mohanji in front of Manasarovar, 2019

The very next day, I received a picture someone sent from Kailash, which showed that the previous day, on 11th Aug, Mohanji sitting in front of Mansarovar and devotees around him! Mohanji in his white attire! Such a resemblance between my vision and this photo proved everything! The vision during Kriya was indeed a divine darshan that Mohanji showed me sitting in front of Datta thousands of miles away, but not too far from him, not too far from Kailash. Such grace. Such love from my Guru. Words falling short to describe!

This was not all. I was reminded of such grace happening in two earlier years when Mohanji had been to Kailash. Although I was far away physically, I still had the darshan of Mohanji in Kailash. I must write those two accounts too.

August 2016. Mohanji was in Kailash with about 80 devotees. I had been following the updates regularly. Photos from Kailash were not just beautiful scenic images. They had life and were passing the Shiva tattva energy. The power was such that sitting on the seashore of Lanzarote (a small island, part of the Canary Islands in Spain, where we were on a family holiday), a small hillock just inside the sea, felt like Kailash. “Om Namah Shivaay” chanting came out spontaneously. Suddenly, the clouds above took a circular form. The epicentre lying just above the tip of the small hillock! Morning sun rays piercing through these clouds indicated definitely something divine!

At that point I had such connection with Kailash, I felt as if I was with Mohanji in Kailash. I thought, next Kailash with Mohanji, I must go.

The year passed. Kailash with Mohanji in 2017 came. However, I couldn’t go! While Mohanji and the devotees were in Kailash in 2017, devotees all over the world were doing a 24 hour long continuous chanting on 16th July 2017. In London, at my home, we were doing the group chanting, during which I had a vision that

Mohanji was standing inside Mansarovar. The water was blue coloured and crystal clear. I then saw all the Gods & Goddesses, Ganesh, Lakshmi, Saraswati and all the other Gods in the sky, showering flowers on him.

This vision was so clear and so divine. After the chanting was over, I shared this vision with everyone and expressed my gratitude to Mohanji for giving me darshan while in Mansarovar.

Two days later, a photo came in with the update from Kailash, the photo of Mohanji inside Mansarovar. This matched the vision I had during chanting.

Mohanji_Manasarovar_1_2017.jpg
Mohanji inside the Manasarovar, 2017

My heart was filled with deep gratitude to have received this darshan despite being physically so far away in London!

However, somewhere inside me, I had a slight feeling of guilt. Where did my desire for Kailash go? How did I leave this opportunity to go to Kailash with Mohanji in 2017? A few months later, in November 2017, I got a chance to be with Mohanji in Serbia and I couldn’t hold myself but to express this feeling of guilt to him. The spontaneous answer that came from Mohanji, left me speechless.

“I just don’t carry people to Kailash physically, I carry people spiritually too. You have been to Kailash with me spiritually. Your desire has been fulfilled. Hence no more desire.”

Well, what more did I need to understand?

Indeed Mohanji carried me with Him in 2016 and in 2017 too! This year in 2019, before Mohanji left for Kailash, I had no doubt, I knew Mohanji would carry me with him, along with all the other devotees connected to him. Mohanji’s message for all connected to Him,

“You are inside me. How can you be separate from me?”

filled my heart with gratitude and profound love for the unconditional love and compassion he has for me, for all of us!

Through this vision during Kriya in front of Lord Datta, Mohanji proved this yet again! Not that I needed any proof. But he knows that this naïve heart still desires every single vision of my beloved Guru, physically or astrally! His darshan makes me pure, makes me complete, liberates me from all worldly desires.

I am so deeply touched by the grace that the Tradition and Mohanji shower on me (in fact on all of us), much beyond our expectations and imaginations. My deep gratitude to Mohanji my Guru, and this sacred Tradition that we belong to!

Jai Shree Datta.

Jai Mohanji.

By Moushumi Patankar

On the 10th and 11th of August, my family and I were with the ACT Foundation team for the food seva in Skanda Vale. On the 11th, after attending the powerful reunion ceremony of Lord Subramanyam, Subhasree, NellyAnne and I went to the Lord Datta temple.

When we were in front of Lord Datta, we decided to sit down for Kriya.

As soon as I sat, I felt as if my whole body was rotating in 360 degrees. After a few moments, I saw beautiful lights; blue/light green just like the colour of a beautiful lake, orange/ yellow/gold like bright sunshine or a havan (sacred fire). I then saw many faces. The first face was of my beloved Datta swaroopa Mohanji who was right in front of us, smiling at us. And then a thought, aah so many faces along with Mohanji’s! In the end, just before finishing Kriya I saw Mohanji’s aura!

I realised the vision I had during this Kriya in front of Datta was of Mohanji with the other Kailash Yatris in front of Mansarovar! Without any expectations, without any imagination, Mohanji and Lord Datta graced me with this divine vision, so far away from Kailash.

My deep gratitude to Mohanji for filling every single moment of my life with his grace.

Mohanji in Skanda Vale – August 2018

By Subhasree Thottungal, UK

During Mohanji’s recent UK trip in August, He visited the Skanda Vale Ashram in Wales from the 14th to the 18th. The primary event that happened during this time was the Prana Pratishtha (consecration) of Lord Dattatrya’s idol and Nagaraja’s idol in the ashram temple.

Skanda Vale Ashram in Wales is a place very close to Mohanji’s heart and every time Mohanji visits the UK, He makes it a point to visit the ashram.

MOhanji_with_datta2.jpg

The backdrop to this event was Mohanji’s visit in May 2016 when Lord Garuda’s idol was consecrated in the Sri Ranganatha Temple in Skanda Vale. The installation of Lord Garuda was suggested by Mohanji as he said that where Lord Vishnu resides, Garuda must also be present, as Garuda is Lord Vishnu’s Vahana (vehicle). This idol appears majestic with the face expressing the power of Garuda and the body expressing the strength of Hanuman. You can read more about the Garuda Prana Pratishtha ceremony in Skanda Vale, in this page. Mohanji also suggested at the time that Lord Nagaraja should be present at the entrance of Shri Ranganatha temple for protection of the temple.

In September 2017, Mohanji made another trip to the UK, exclusively for spending time with the Skanda Vale community. During that trip he made a suggestion to the Swamis that it would be beneficial to the ashram if Lord Dattatreya was to be installed in Skanda Vale in an open area, exposed to the elements and sheltered by a fig tree.

The Skanda Vale community took up this suggestion wholeheartedly. Without delay the sculptor was commissioned to make the idols of both Lord Dattatreya and Lord Nagaraja (which was pending from the previous visit) and they started the construction of the area where Lord Dattatreya’s idol was to be placed and the Fig tree planted. The Skanda Vale community planned for the consecration of the two idols to take place during Mohanji’s UK visit to Skanda vale in August 2018.

A fig tree which was grown by one of the first Swamis to be ordained in Skanda Vale was selected to provide shade for Lord Dattatreya.

When the Lord wants to come and reside in a place, everything falls into place. It was a divine plan that Lord Dattatreya had to reside in Skanda Vale!

The beautifully carved idols arrived on time from India perfectly preserved and without any transport and customs issues. The dates for the Prana Pratishtha and the exact schedule for the ceremonies were finalised. Special priests were called to carry out the elaborate Prana Pratishtha ceremony over two days. This was a special week in Skanda Vale with the annual Subramanium Festival also taking place at the same time. The festivities were taken to even greater heights with the additional preparations for Lord Dattatreya and Lord Nagaraja’s Prana Pratishtha in Mohanji’s presence.

After reaching Skanda Vale late in the evening of 14th Aug, straight after the London retreat, Mohanji was ready for the rituals to commence the next day.

Homa3

15th Aug was the day when the initial purification process through Homam and other rituals happened.

Although the previous week had been dry and sunny, the weather reverted to type in Skanda Vale and it was raining heavily on the first day of the installation! The place where the Homam was taking place was very exposed, however the Skanda Vale community and Mohanji seemed completely unaffected by the rain and the wind, such was their joy and excitement!

Idols were brought near the designated place and Mohanji then carried out the ritual of opening the eyes, symbolising birth.

kalas_abhishek

It was yet another miracle that 15th Aug was ‘Naga Panchami’, the most auspicious day when the Naga Devtas are worshiped! On this very day, the commencement of the Prana Pratishtha ceremony occurred starting with the purification rites, positioning and placement of the Nagaraja idol and opening of the eyes. This seemed like a divinely inspired perfect plan.

Naga_idol_placement1

There were three specially blessed lingams that were to be placed under the Dattatreya idol. Unfortunately these had been left in London! Anxious calls were made to various devotees in London to see who could bring the lingams to Skanda Vale within the next six hours! This became a miraculous event for Mr & Mrs Thakkar who had wished to visit Skanda Vale for this inauguration but left it too late to make the arrangements. While sadly contemplating their fate they got the call to bring the lingams from London! They were divinely summoned by the lord to bring the Lingam stones just in time for the ceremony while also getting the golden opportunity to participate in the ceremony of Lord Dattatreya’s Prana Pratishtha.

On the 16th of August, the Prana Pratishtha puja and elaborate rituals continued for the whole day. The Maha Abhishek (bathing the idol with various sacred ingredients and finally dressing up the idol with new clothes and garlands) was a grand ceremony happening amidst mantra chanting and bhajans, filling the air with beautiful vibrations and a divine energy. After the inauguration, one of the priests who was especially invited to perform the ceremony told us that while he was performing the inauguration, he glanced at Mohanji and saw Lord Dattatreya instead!

The idol looked radiantly beautiful, shining after the Abhishek and adorned with clothes, garlands etc.

Dattatreya1

The idol didn’t look like just a stone idol. Lord Dattatreya appeared like an exceptionally handsome prince. The effulgent Lord looked stunning with striking smiles on the three faces; Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva on the sides and Lord Vishnu in the center.

After the Abhishek, Mohanji carried out the actual Prana Pratishtha; putting the life force in the statue through the heart centre.

Followed by this, Mohanji then did the naming ceremony, whispering the name in the ear of the idol.

Then began the Maha Arati. The atmosphere became electrified. We could feel the idol being alive.

After the busy two days packed with the beautiful ceremonies, Mohanji spent the next couple of days in satsang with the Skanda Vale community and devotees.

As before, Mohanji did not hesitate to give His unconditional love to the hard-working, extremely sincere and disciplined community members through a series of casual satsangs.

Whenever the community members visited Mohanji at the beautiful cottage very kindly and lovingly provided by Skanda Vale, he made sure that they all received utmost love and care and that delicious food cooked by Mohanji’s team was served to them all.

It felt like home with relatives visiting! We were one big family. The feelings of love and joy were prominent in the Skanda Vale family  and Mohanji family.

Incidentally, not just humans but even the animals felt the same joy and warmth too! Such as the four highlanders, who graze in a huge field just outside the cottage where Mohanji was residing. The love between Mohanji and the highlanders was beautiful. Especially ‘Hari’ who had been repeatedly saved by the grace of the divine.

Even Valli the elephant was brought by the Swamis to meet Mohanji! Mohanji and everyone else in the cottage at that time jumped for joy to see Valli. Mohanji rushed outside in just his vest and without his slippers! The excitement was mutual! Stroking her trunk, feeding her some food, getting her blessing and observing the silent communion between Mohanji and Valli was a beautiful experience that everyone cherished.

These moments are priceless. They cannot be planned, demanded or comprehended!  When you are with Mohanji, anything and everything is possible. All you need is a heart full of love and eyes to recognise grace.

This trip of Mohanji to Skanda Vale was an extra ordinary trip for many reasons. Bringing Lord Dattatreya to Skanda Vale is of high significance as it reaffirmed the continuation of the tradition.

Mohanji’s visit to Skanda Vale was indeed a very special visit that the Skanda Vale community and Mohanji UK family will cherish forever. The fragrance of sincerity, dedication, devotion, discipline, compassion and above all unconditional love filled the air and made us all feel truly blessed.

With deep gratitude to Mohanji and the Skanda Vale community.

In Devotees’ words:

We asked some of the devotees who travelled to Skanda Vale with Mohanji about the significance of this visit.

Here are few of the expressions in their words:

Vijay Ramanaidoo:

vijay_fam.jpg

I first visited Skanda Vale as a young teenager in 1976 when my father brought our family there all the way from London. At that time the place was very different to what it is today! Throughout the years my family and I have visited countless times and had the enormous privilege to meet with Guru Subramanium, both at Skanda Vale and in Switzerland at the seminars held in Fideris and Kiental. Skanda Vale is a very special place for myself, my wife and our two children who were both blessed by Guru Subramanium on their first visits to Skanda vale when only a few months old. Guru Subramanium left a huge hole in our lives when he left his body in 2007.

One of my favourite temples at Skanda vale is the magnificent Sri Ranganatha temple. This is a temple of Lord Vishnu who is reclining on a serpent surrounded by water. The temple is unique in Skanda Vale in that it is an outdoor temple exposed to the elements. In the early years of visiting Skanda Vale, the area where the Sri Ranganatha temple is situated now used to be a field. I remember our Sai group from London singing bhajans in this field near the borderline with the trees. In 1997, during a puja in one of the other temples, a vision of the future Sri Ranganatha temple was revealed to Guru Subramanium. After miraculously locating the murti, the construction of the temple commenced soon after.

We used to travel regularly to Skanda vale during the construction of the temple and would stay for a few days in order to help in any small way with the building work. I remember that sometimes Guru Subramanium would come down while we were working and give us a piece of chocolate infused with divine vibrations to energise us! Slowly the temple took shape. Finally the time came for the inauguration of the temple on 30th October 1999 (Guru’s birthday). We had the wonderful opportunity to anoint the idol with oil just before the flood of water was released to create the pond which currently surrounds the idol.

When I first met Mohanji in 2011, on his first trip to the UK, I had a very strong desire to take him to Skanda Vale. At the time it was not possible and it was not until July 2015 that I was finally blessed to be able to take Mohanji and Devi to Skanda Vale. Mohanji instantly felt a strong connection with Skanda Vale and the monsatic community and was in immense admiration of the sankalpa of Guru Subramanium, who was able to create and sustain a place of this spiritual stature.

When Mohanji first visited the Sri Ranganatha temple in 2015 he said that Lord Garuda should be present wherever Lord Vishnu resides. He also suggested that Lord Nagaraja should be present at the entrance of the Vishnu temple for protection. Both of these promises have now been fulfilled! On a later trip to Skanda Vale Mohanji suggested that Lord Dattareya should also have a presence at Skanda Vale as wherever Lord Dattareya is, beings of a higher frequency also visit and the community will benefit from their high vibrational energies. This promise has also now been fulfilled.

The addition of Lord Nagaraja to protect the temple, Lord Garuda as Lord Vishnu’s vehicle and Lord Dattatreya in my view has served to enhance the beauty and spiritual vibrations of the Sri Ranganatha temple. I feel truly privileged to have been invited by Mohanji to play a small part in helping to get the idols to Skanda Vale. I also feel privileged to be present at this inauguration and to witness the Prana Pratishtha performed by Mohanji. All of these events are the icing on the cake for the wonderful association we have been blessed to have with Mohanji, Skanda Vale and the Sri Ranganatha temple over the years.

In addition to this, I feel that Mohanji’s trip was an opportunity for him to offer his loving support, encouragement and endorsement to the amazing work of the Skanda Vale Swamis, monks, sisters and community members which is all a testament to the grace and sankalpa of Guru Subramanium.

Subhasree:

Subhasree

Well, Mohanji’s visit to Skanda Vale was a bouquet with many exotic flowers:

1. Bringing Lord Datta to Skanda Vale wasn’t a simple thing. From creation to consecration, the smooth execution proved, this is nothing but a divine plan. It can’t be ignored as an ordinary event.

2. Skanda Vale Swamis chose Him to do all the rituals as the “Karta”, means a lot too. It showed the unity and the love between Mohanji and Skandavale family.

3. The sincerity and dedication with which He performed every activity taught us a lot. Being present on time for every single ritual, complete involvement, no reaction to any physical discomfort (be it getting wet in the rain or eyes constantly watering due to thick smoke or pain from walking barefoot on the stone chips while carrying a heavy pot with water on the head or even the hot oil spilling on the hand during Arati), nothing seemed to have troubled Him. That showed His ekagrata – focus and concentration. During the rituals, the mantra chanting, the detail in which Mohanji was carrying out the instructions from the priest, showed the devotion factor too. Even with all the attention and success, there was not even a drop of ego or ownership. If we just observe Him, we see the living example of a Raja Yogi, who has gone beyond the physical existence and has attained the perpetual bliss (samadhi) state. He showed us what it is to accept (accepting all situations), what it is not to have ownership and what it is not to have ego. In the incident of the evil eye being found during one of the rituals of purification, He let the priest lead, decide and do as per his custom. Allowing the priests to do everything as per their way, He gave them immense respect. At any moment in those two days, Mohanji never displayed any ego, doer-ship or showed off His knowledge. Basically, Mohanji lived His teachings. Just by observing Him, we learn this.

4. Even after tiring continuous activities, He always made Himself available and accessible to people who wanted to speak with Him, whether he or she is a Swami, monk, nun or a devotee. There was an instance when a teenage girl suddenly appeared outside the Shakti temple, demanding to speak with Him. It was already late in the evening and it was drizzling too, but Mohanji had no hesitation. He spoke to the girl and her mother and even gave them Shaktipat. There were many instances like that. All this showed Mohanji’s unconditional love, kindness and compassion.

Mohanji’s compassion towards the animals is worth mentioning too! I have seen the glow in His face, the sparkle in His eyes, the moment He spots the deers, or the Highlanders grazing in the field or meeting Valli. On the Prana Pratishtha day, He was wet from the sacred water being poured on His head, but when He came back to the cottage, He stood still for a few minutes near the field blessing the Highlanders! I was wondering, if it was us we would first run inside to get changed! These instances may go unnoticed, but the essence is that everything that He says, shows in the way He leads His life.

5. Feeding everyone who comes home was a top priority instruction to me! Not just making food available but to serve everyone with love and purity – this is such an important message about keeping our tradition that Mohanji kept giving me all the time. The various challenges that I was facing, I understood, were just to strengthen my conviction and commitment to keep up the tradition. Not to hesitate, not to back out, but to maintain that love and purity always. Whenever I lacked in something, He was there to correct me and to prevent me from falling. That was demonstrating true fatherhood. He let me walk independently, but never let me fall. Whenever I stumbled, He held my hand.

In essence, Mohanji brought Lord Datta and Datta tradition to Skanda Vale. He demonstrated the tradition through His own living. The most amazing fact was that the divine showed approval through how smoothly everything was executed. In Mohanji’s presence, there was no scope for any failure. After all, this was all Lord Datta’s play for His homecoming!

Jai Guru Datta. Jai Mohanji.

Vigneswara:

Vighneshwra

I had gone to Skanda Vale to spend some quality time with Mohanji in a powerful place, where the energy levels are always very high. Of course, when I came to know that there were two days of rituals of Lord Datta and Nagaraja Prana Pratishtha, my joy was unexplainable. The energy during these rituals were so high, as if all the 33 crore deities had descended. The Divine showed their blessings in the form of showers which poured during the homa and pujas. While everyone was so deeply merged in the pujas, I was struggling to bear the high vibrations! It became so unbearable that I had to come inside the Ranganath temple, moving away from the open place where the homa was happening. There I suddenly saw Guru Subramanyam standing! I couldn’t first believe what I was seeing, I just kept surrendering to Mohanji and the Guru Mandala. Mohanji was doing all the rituals with so much dedication and sincerely, it felt as if Lord Datta Himself has come down. The visions, the power and the vibrations of this ritual was amazing.

After the celebrations, I also got some time to be in Mohanji’s presence at the cottage and even got the opportunity to do some seva to Him by pressing His legs. Little did I know what is going to happen to me being in a power center, after participating in such a high energy ceremony and touching Mohanji’s body which is a power house! His one glance, one touch and one Shaktipat can clean thousands of layers of karma. I was not just touching Him, but was even pressing His legs! That night, I had such deep cleansing in all levels, physical, mental and spiritual. The transformation that came was beyond my expectation.

Not only this, on the very last day, I also had the opportunity to do food seva in the form of making some South Indian snacks and selling them to the devotes to raise funds for the Skanda Vale Hospice. While I was preparing the food, we had some obstacles such as not having the right tools. However, nothing could hamper my spirit. Because I was not doing this just for selling, I was offering this to my Lord, Mohanji. So whatever effort it may take, I had no worries, no stress. With love for my beloved Krishna, Mohanji, I prepared every single item. Even though I could not go up to the cottage to offer this to Mohanji myself, some food was sent to Him and later I heard that not only He ate, He enjoyed them too. That day we had a very good collection, from an unexpected snack stall event. Skanda Vale Swamis appreciated this a lot.

This trip with Mohanji to Skanda Vale and these memories will stay in my heart forever.

Jai Mohanji.

Mita:

Mita

I have been visiting Skanda Vale for many years. This place with its serene environment and powerful energy always makes me feel divine. Since Mohanji started visiting Skanda Vale, I feel more connected to Skanda Vale. The community, Swamis, Brothes & Sisters feel like our own family.

It was a great opportunity to be at Skanda Vale again in Mohanji’s presence. This time it was even amazing as Lord Dattatreya’s Prana Pratishtha was going to happen. In October 2016, when Mohanji participated in the Soma Skanda Temple inauguration in Switzerland, I was blessed to be there and the experience from that time is still vivid in my memory. I couldn’t miss such an opportunity again!

Knowing that bringing Lord Dattatreya to Skanda Vale was Mohanji’s suggestion, a divine plan that was being manifested through Mohanji, I felt even more fortunate to be able to be present in this occasion.

The two days long ceremony was just out of the world! The vibrations, the purity, the divinity was beyond comprehension. Mohanji was performing all the rituals and that made me feel like I was part of the family doing this ceremony, not just a spectator attending. Everything just looked so beautiful, cheerful, joyful. The air was filled with positivity. There was no stress or tiredness. All the ceremonies went on so smoothly. The Maha Abhishek and Arati was just so powerful. When the Arati was going on, I had closed my eyes and when I opened and looked at Mohanji performing the Arati, it looked as if Swayam Maha Kali was doing the Arati. Maa Kali in Skanda Vale is the most beautiful, compassionate and loving Maa Shakti. That’s exactly how I felt when I saw Mohanji doing this Arati. My head bowed with devotion.

Lord Datta looked so beautiful and alive!

I have no words to convey my gratitude to Mohanji for having given me this opportunity to be in this ceremony. This was indeed a once in a life time experience.

Not just the Prana Pratishtha ceremony, but being in Mohanji’s presence, I got a chance to be in the loving presence of the Swamis, Sisters and Brothers too. Serving food to the divine souls was a secret desire which was fulfilled unexpectedly and this made me feel very content. In Mohanji’s presence, we only experience joy. He calls me lovingly “chef”. Whatever little I do in Ahimsa, is only trying to walk on the path our Guru has shown us. I can’t hide my smiles and joy when He calls me that. Well, while with Him, we have no desire, no asking, just soaking in His unconditional love and compassion. The four days in Skandavale with Mohanji were in deed the most fulfilling experience so far.

Thank you Mohanji for all your love and keeping us with you always.

Yours “chef”, Mita.
